EBay’s Endless Runway Spotlights British Fashion Fixtures’ Forever Pieces

FOREVER PIECES: EBaycontinues its push for pre-loved for the third year running, kicking off with an auction Thursday featuring items by British fashion fixtures.

The global online marketplace put under the virtual hammer pieces contributed by model Adwoa Aboah, stylist Harry Lambert, designer Charles Jeffrey, actress Daisy Edgar-Jones, filmmaker Akinola Davies and award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell.

“We wanted our contributors to interpret ‘Forever’ in a very personal way, and bringing together a cross-section of culture gave us the opportunity to explore different ideas of permanence,” said Kirsty Keoghan, general manager, EU fashion at eBay. “For example, costume designer Sandy Powell CBE donated a beautiful nightgown worn by Scarlett Johansson in the 2008 film ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’ as it was made for a film set in the 16th century and will forever live on screen.”

British actor and author Raven Smith, who also contributed pieces to the sale, rattled off prices and facts for the London fashion crowd seated in the Brutalist landmark Space House, while each item was auctioned off live on eBay, with online commenters sending in thoughts — and bids.

Up for grabs were a large Gucci B shoulder bag donated by Edgar-Jones, with an opening price of 500 British pounds; a Jean Paul Gaultier Mona Lisa mesh top contributed by Lambert, and a Chanel 2005 tweed skirt suit jacket that went for 650 pounds.

This year’s eBay Circular Fashion Fund will be going to Central Saint Martins to support the next generation of creative individuals. “A more circular fashion industry requires collaboration. We all start somewhere, and the designers, stylists and creative voices shaping fashion in the future need opportunities to develop their ideas and find their place within the industry,” Keoghan said in a preview. “That’s also reflected in the snapshot of culture we’ve created through our curators this year: bringing together different perspectives, generations and creative communities.”
