PHILADELPHIA — Quarterback Jalen Hurts’ speed has been standing out at Eagles’ training camp, and members of the defense are taking notice.

“I think Jalen’s having a good camp. I think he looks faster,” said defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. “Obviously we can’t touch him during practice so there’s always that debate whether you had him or not [for a sack] and I think there’s been a few times where our guys think they had him and they really didn’t.”

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jalen Carter agrees. He came into training camp about 10 pounds lighter but is still having a hard time catching up to QB1.

“I don’t know what it is but when I’m watching and I’m running [after him], it’s like a movie, it feels like I’m going slow,” Carter said. “He be moving man, he’s been working hard and he’s the one, for sure.”

Hurts has been a force in the running game for years, racking up 3,554 yards and 63 touchdowns on the ground over six NFL seasons. But last season, he had the fewest rushing attempts (105), yards (421) and touchdowns (8) in a season since he became the full-time starter in 2021.

New Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has been dialing up a healthy amount of designed quarterback runs this summer, signaling Hurts’ legs will still be a part of the attack even as Philadelphia moves to a more under-center operation.

Hurts said he didn’t make any notable changes to his training regimen this offseason and said he doesn’t “feel any different than I have felt in the past.”

Hurts, who turned 28 on Aug. 7, is at the controls of a brand-new scheme under Mannion. There have been ups and downs against this top-tier Eagles defense, but Hurts is receiving positive reviews to this point.

“I think he’s moving good, and I think he’s doing a nice job with the new offense,” Fangio said. “A lot has been made about him and all these coordinators he’s been with, but it’s basically been the same offense every year. This is different, and I think he’s done a great job with it.”
