Denim Tears is stepping into the fragrance category.

For its latest collaboration with Comme des Garçons, Denim Tears has made Tears, a fragrance with Comme des Garçons Parfums.

The brand said the scent is composed around the “smell of cotton, extracting the essence from rural Georgia just after the rain, when heat rises off the red clay and the cotton fields sit wet and green.” The musk floral composition opens with Galbanum, Ambrettolide, and Sage, moves into Daffodil, Jasmine, Flouve, and Orris, and settles into Vetiver, Hay, Cypriol, and Musk, the brand added.

Tears is a continuation of Denim Tears founder Tremaine Emory’s work built around the African diaspora. The brand said Tears “translates this work into an olfactory narrative” and continues the relationship between Denim Tears and Comme des Garçons.

The campaign for Tears was shot by Dexter Navy in Harlem, Georgia. The location has personal ties to Emory. “There’s certain smells that I know of from my time spending my summers in Harlem, Georgia: the red clay, the morning dew, all of it, the sweat from the heat, all of it, and all that mixes together here,” he said.

Adrian Joffe, president and CEO of Comme des Garçons, described the unique partnership.

“In the true CDG spirit of collaboration, there was no brainstorming,” he said. “The work was born out of trust. Tremaine was responsible for the concept and was totally free to design the beautiful bottle and box. On our side, we worked on creating the fragrance according to his concept and continued until we made something he loved.”

Tears will be available on Sept. 18 on Denim Tears’ website and at Africa Diaspora Goods in New York, select Dover Street Market locations and Comme des Garçons stores worldwide. It will retail for $180.
