Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) on Monday, forcing the cancellation of both scheduled flights. The incident involved an Endeavor Air-operated Delta flight DL5051 to New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Frontier flight F92395 to 
Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). While no injuries have been reported, both aircraft sustained damage and were removed from service pending inspection, investigation, and repair work.
Ground collisions are relatively uncommon but can still have significant operational consequences, particularly at busy hub airports such as Charlotte. Even low-speed impacts during pushback or taxi require detailed inspections to determine whether an aircraft has suffered structural damage. The latest incident is another reminder that aircraft remain vulnerable on the ground despite moving at only a fraction of their flying speeds.
What Happened At Charlotte Douglas Airport?
The aircraft involved were Frontier Airlines Airbus A320neo registration N364FR, which was preparing to operate flight F92395 from Charlotte to Houston, and Endeavor Air Bombardier CRJ-900LR registration N931XJ, operating on behalf of 
Delta Air Lines. Simple Flying reached out to CLT airport and got confirmation of the slight contact between two aircraft while one of the aircraft was being pushed back from its gate. According to the photos circulating on social media from the airport, the Delta CRJ-900 is shown parked at the gate while its tail touched the Frontier A320’s wingtip as the aircraft was passing by. Both aircraft came into contact on the ramp area.
Following the collision, both airlines canceled their affected flights while maintenance teams assessed the damage. Frontier’s service to Houston did not depart as scheduled, while Delta’s regional flight to New York LaGuardia was also scrubbed from the day’s operations. Airport personnel secured the area before the aircraft were repositioned for inspection, with the exact sequence of events expected to be examined by investigators.
Why Ground Collisions Still Happen
Although aircraft move slowly during pushback, the operation requires close coordination between the flight crew, tug operators, ramp personnel and air traffic control. Modern airports often have congested ramp areas where multiple aircraft are simultaneously departing, arriving and being repositioned. A small error in timing, communication, or aircraft positioning can quickly result in contact between aircraft.
Charlotte Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States and regularly handles hundreds of daily departures across multiple airlines. While American Airlines dominates the airport, carriers including Delta and Frontier also maintain sizeable operations there. Heavy traffic during peak departure periods increases the importance of precise ground coordination.
The extent of the damage has not yet been officially detailed, although even seemingly minor impacts can require extensive inspections. Airlines must verify that structures such as winglets, tail parts, flight controls and composite components have not been compromised before returning an aircraft to service. Depending on inspection findings, repairs can range from cosmetic work to lengthy structural maintenance.

Luckily, ground handling incidents rarely threaten passenger safety because aircraft move at relatively low speeds, but they often have major operational consequences. Even minor structural contact typically triggers engineering inspections, paperwork, regulatory reporting and schedule disruptions that can ripple throughout an airline’s network. Replacement aircraft are not always immediately available, particularly for regional operators with tightly scheduled fleets.
Investigators will now seek to determine exactly how the two aircraft came into contact during the pushback sequence. Their findings could identify whether the incident resulted from ramp procedures, aircraft positioning, tug operations or communication between ground personnel.
