What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.
A little over two months after Prime Minister Mark Carney officially unveiled what the government is billing as “Canada’s first Defence Industrial Strategy,” NATIONAL DEFENCE members will get the chance to question Defence Minister David McGuinty about the plan as the committee kicks off a self-initiated investigation into the “impact” that it will have “on the operational readiness of the Canadian Armed Forces, on the Canadian defence industry, on the innovation sector, and on the creation of jobs in Canada,” as per the terms of reference adopted in February. Also slated to appear: McGuinty’s deputy minister, Christiane Fox, and a full contingent of senior military and departmental officials. (4:30 p.m.)
Meanwhile, JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS members are still going through the fine print of Justice Minister Sean Fraser’s proposal to strengthen current Criminal Code measures related to gender-based violence, child protection and court delays. (4:30 p.m.)
Over on the Senate side, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem will field questions on the current state of the economy during a two-hour appearance at BANKING, COMMERCE AND THE ECONOMY. (4:15 p.m.)
Rounding out the roster, members of the SENATE SUBCOMMITTEE ON VETERANS AFFAIRS will hear from Veterans Affairs Minister Jill McKnight and Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson as part of their ongoing review of homelessness amongst veterans. (12 p.m.)
