Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is getting an official sequel, one not directed by Tarantino himself. Seven and Fight Club director David Fincher is helming it instead with a new story that focuses on Brad Pitt’s stuntman character Cliff Booth. We got our first look at The Adventures of Cliff Booth back in February, when Netflix released a teaser trailer for the sequel. On Wednesday, the streamer offered an important update on the movie, confirming a new title, an IMAX release, and a streaming debut on Netflix.

The Adventures of Cliff Booth has been retitled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth — for reasons unknown — and will make its Netflix debut on Dec. 23.

Fincher and Tarantino fans will get an early look at the film in November. Netflix reconfirmed an exclusive two-week run in IMAX theaters globally starting Nov. 25. So if you want to see what a Fincher-led sequel to Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood looks like on the biggest screen, you have a limited window.

Pitt will reprise his Best Supporting Actor Academy Award-winning role as Cliff Booth in the film. While the original film was set in 1969, the sequel will take place in 1977 in “a very different Hollywood,” Netflix says. The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian. Fincher directed from a script written by Tarantino, the latter of which has not revealed his 10th and final film-directing project.

We praise the original film in this unusual two-part movie series back in 2019. Critic Karen Han said at the time, “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is easily the quietest and most meditative of [Tarantino’s] works, ending with a startlingly soft and sweet moment that contextualizes everything that came before it as, ultimately, a love letter.”
