Control Resonant becomes the fastest-selling game in Remedy’s history, outpacing Alan Wake 2 and the original Control

The latest game to pass a 1 million copies sold milestone is Control Resonant. Developer Remedy Entertainment broke the news yesterday, roughly three weeks after the game’s release, revealing that Resonant is now the fastest-selling game in the Finnish studio’s 31-year history.

Remedy didn’t share a digital/physical split, nor say which platform led sales, but these are good numbers for a Remedy game, and even more impressive considering the unusually packed September release schedule Resonant released into.

Remedy CEO Jean-Charles Gaudechon, who took over as boss of the company in February, called this a “very strong start”. “Control Resonant is Remedy’s first self-published release of this scale, launched into one of the most competitive windows in years alongside the industry’s biggest names,” Gaudechon said.

“We have always believed Control deserved an even bigger audience, and this launch shows what’s possible: we see the game connecting with long-time fans while bringing a significant number of new players into the world of Control, which strengthens its long-term potential.”

Gaudechon’s comments are particularly notable as the executive – who previously led a sports betting platform – recently had to assuage fans who feared his leadership would take the studio in a different direction.

To that end, Gaudechon said Remedy would continue to build on its two “established” franchises in Control and Alan Wake, adding that: “Our focus is to build on what makes them special, support them, and grow them even further. There is a lot more to come from these worlds.”

Although we don’t have like-for-like sales data for the original Control, the game sold 2 million copies by the end of 2020, 15 months after launch. Alan Wake 2 – previously the fastest-selling Remedy game – by contrast took about two months to reach the 1 million milestone in 2023. Incidentally, Resonant is the lowest-rated of all three. Alexis Ong awarded it three stars in the Eurogamer review, saying it ” feels like it’s chasing the hallmarks of a live-service game while trying, only partly successfully, to echo the very deliberate structure and style of the genre storytelling that worked so well in the first game”.

Control Resonant joins the likes of The Blood of Dawnwalker, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Star Wars Zero Company, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve as recent releases that have all sold over 1 million copies.

If you’re already playing Remedy’s latest, or want to do so soon, the Eurogamer Control Resonant walkthrough is a helpful companion that’ll make navigating the game’s open world and making sense of its many character upgrades a breeze.
