Connecticut native, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow rewarded with contract extension

Connecticut native Craig Breslow was rewarded for a challenging year leading the Boston Red Sox front office. The team exercised the 2029 and 2030 options on his contract, keeping him under contract through 2030.

Breslow serves as the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer and came under heavy scrutiny in Boston and around baseball earlier this season after firing manager Alex Cora and five coaches following a 10-17 start to the 2026 season. Players objected to Cora’s departure and were not given an opportunity to ask questions about the decision, according to The Boston Globe. Veteran Trevor Story said the explanations provided for the firings were “not satisfactory.”

However, Breslow, team owner John Henry and president Sam Kennedy were vindicated as the season progressed and the Red Sox clinched a postseason berth Sunday. Interim manager Chad Tracy, who led Boston on a 32-5 run that began June 25, was named the team’s full-time manager and agreed to a three-year contract Tuesday.

“We believed in the players that we had, and I felt it was really important that we acted definitively and decisively when we did, so that we could create an environment around the players that was supportive, and that would allow them to thrive,” Breslow said, according to MLB.com. “And they responded, and while there might have been people that questioned what this group was capable of, I think they answered resoundingly.”

Breslow was born in New Haven and, unsurprisingly, went on to star in baseball at Trumbull High School, winning a Class LL championship on the mound. He also remains one of the Eagles soccer program’s all-time leading scorers and was inducted into the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Later recognized as the “smartest man in baseball” by a Minneapolis Star Tribune writer, Breslow attended Yale, where he finished third in the Ivy League in earned-run average as a junior (2.61) and led the league as a senior (2.56). Breslow became the first Yale pitcher since Ron Darling debuted with the New York Mets in 1983 to reach the major leagues. He made 576 appearances as a relief pitcher over 12 major league seasons.

The Red Sox currently sit as the No. 5 seed in the American League and are likely to face the rival New York Yankees in the wild-card round. Boston began a three-game series against Cleveland at Fenway Park on Tuesday evening before wrapping up the regular season this weekend against the Chicago Cubs.
