Congress passes war powers resolution, offering rare rebuke of Trump

The Senate on Tuesday adopted a Iran war powers resolution passed earlier this month in the House by a 50-48 vote in a symbolic, yet rare, rebuke of President Donald Trump.

Republican Sens. Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul voted in favor of the resolution while Democrat Sen. John Fetterman voted against it.

The White House brushed off the Senate’s passing the resolution with a White House official noting that it has “no significance” and saying that it was driven by “Republican absences.”

Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick did not vote on the resolution.

“The resolution directs the President to remove U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran. Yet there are no hostilities from which to remove U.S. forces, as hostilities terminated with the ceasefire on April 7th,” The White House official said in a statement.

The four Republican senators who voted for Monday’s resolution have previously joined Democrats on previous Iran war powers votes.

The resolution does not carry the force of law but is an indication of the growing concern both chambers have now voiced with Trump’s handling of the war.

Trump is expected to meet with Republican senators on Wednesday on a number of topics. Multiple Republican senators have said they hope to get more information from Trump on negotiations with Iran.
