Commit cinematic sacrilege in Baldur’s Gate 3 with this true third-person camera mod

Video game cameras are often a point of contention primarily because a bad one can completely disorient you, or even outright make you feel sick. These are worthwhile things to consider, but I do wish there was more of a discussion around the specific choices that are made in particular camera angles and positions, and how it might actually be important that certain games should be played in the way they are designed. I’m going to throw all of that out of the window right now though and tell you about a Baldur’s Gate 3 true third-person camera mod.

This mod, found over on Nexus Mods as most of them tend to be (ta, PC Gamer), is made by modder Relysia, and does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. “True over-the-shoulder third-person camera mod. Features a camera closely attached to your character, dynamic FOV when running, smooth crouch transitions, and full MCM configuration,” the mod page explains. It should be noted, however, that “during gameplay actions, such as spell targeting, jumping, or inspecting the camera temporarily switches back to the normal view and automatically returns to over-the-shoulder mode once finished.”

The result, which you can check out in the video above, does genuinely look quite natural! It’s not very janky-looking, the camera follows multiple characters quite neatly; I’d believe you if you told me this is just how the game looks! Whether it should look that way, well, see my above comments, but this is the lawless world of modding, anything goes here. Conveniently you can tweak the positioning of the camera too, what the FOV is, how much it’s offset whether you’re standing or crouching. There’s more options here than most games, so kudos there!

Perhaps this is one you might like to pair with a bevy of other mods relatively recently highlighted by good ole Mark, like this one that adds in an extra Astarion ending, or this one that overhauls Wyll’s companion quest. There’s even that Path to Menzoberranzan custom campaign mod that’ll be getting a demo… somewhen.
