Cole Strange Explains Why Familiarity With Mike McDaniel’s Offense Led Him to Chargers

Despite just joining the Los Angeles Chargers in March, guard Cole Strange is the most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s scheme.

McDaniel and Strange worked together last season with the Miami Dolphins. McDaniel was the head coach, so Strange spent the season getting to know McDaniel’s style of play. Strange said his familiarly with McDaniel and his offensive scheme is what drew him to the Chargers in free agency this offseason.

“I think consistency in scheme is a big deal,” Strange said on Monday, per the Chargers’ official team website. “It’s not really talked about much, but running the same offense, particularly this one is unique.

“Being able to do that in back-to-back years was attractive for sure,” Strange added.

Strange signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Chargers in free agency.

Strange Says McDaniel’s Scheme Fits His Strengths

Strange explained how McDaniel’s offensive scheme often involves running off the ball. Strange said this style of play is a strong fit for him because his athleticism is a bigger strength for him than his size.

Strange also said McDaniel’s offensive scheme is similar to what he did in college at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

“I feel like I’ve been comfortable, but there is a little natural comfort to it,” Strange said. “It’s somewhat similar to some of the stuff I did in college too, so I think maybe moreso just a matter of timing in the scheme. Which like I said, it’s a big deal for it to be in this offense for two years in a row.

“The longer you’re in an offense or a scheme, the better, because you know the calls, you know the technique,” Strange added. “It’s not like you’re ground zero every year.”

Strange and the Chargers will begin preseason games on the road against the Houston Texans on Aug. 13.
