Co-op climber Peak finally reaches the summit, with its last major update bringing two foreboding new biomes next week

Just over a year of post-launch additions for climbing with your mates game Peak will end with one last update next week. In what’s called the Final Ascent, devs Aggro Crab and Landfall are wheeling out two spooky new biomes as a challenge to round out the scaling of rugged landscapes.

This swansong will arrive on August 11th, the studios have announced via Steam. By the looks of it, the two final biomes it adds, Gloom and The Citadel, are a medieval dungeon tower and the eerie purple hellscape leading up to it. The devs are teasing that by making your way through them, you’ll finish out the story that kicked off at release by rescuing a scout master who reckons he’s formed a creepy link to the island Peak’s set on.

There’s also a creepy hand near the end of the trailer, suggesting you might have something to scramble away from as you scale these final heights. The two new biomes will cycle out two existing ones, the toasty Caldera and Kiln maps.

As much as it might be a textbook example of a genre very much in vogue right now – funky little games which prioritise facilitating wacky shenanigans among groups of mates above all else – it’s earned plenty of plaudits since it rocked up last summer.

“Dragging my little customisable goober up the mountain, watching my dwindling stamina bar drain and hearing my friends’ screams as they plummet down to their doom from below, I came away with so many organic stories,” our Callum wrote of it in his selection box at the end of last year. “Almost all of them revolved around me being a menace. I’ll never forget testing whether a mushroom was edible by force-feeding it to my far too trusting buddy, who seemed fine until he started shouting expletives, entered a comatose state and comically slid off a rock into the bubbling lava pits below us.”

Hopefully, the Gloom and Citadel don’t have too many lethal fungi our guides writers can terrorise their mates with.
