CD Projekt Red’s CEO still thinks they need to finish their post-Cyberpunk redemption arc, and he’s hoping The Witcher 4 will help

I think despite the mess that was the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, it wouldn’t be right to say that CD Projekt Red’s reputation was completely tarnished. It is still a game with a lot of cultural relevancy, and nobody can shut up about The Witcher 3 to such a degree that it’s even getting a brand new expansion more than 10 years after the last one came out. Even still, it doesn’t sound like joint CEO Michał Nowakowski is entirely convinced that the studio has managed to complete its redemption arc.

Speaking to Edge (via GamesRadar), Nowakowski spoke about Cyberpunk’s difficult launch and how it was a “heartbreaking” time for the studio. In his eyes, CDPR’s reputation was its “biggest asset.” But even though in the years since its launch Cyberpunk has done very well for itself, Nowakowski believes they still have some work to do. “I’m not 100 percent convinced we went through the full redemption arc,” he said. “I’m convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that’s a fair thing. But I do hope we will be able to make it back – if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next.”

This is, of course, a very CEO statement because, again, a lot of people love their games, and the thing that matters most to a CEO is in fact sales, a department Cyberpunk has done quite well in. But there could always be more! In any case, as part of the same interview, Nowakowski also made it clear that they have no intention of becoming a studio that releases a game every year, even if they do want to release them more often (and release three Witcher games in six years).

“Our dream is to be making more games, although we never want to turn into the studio that’s going to be launching a big game every year,” Nowakowski explains. “It may happen, but this is not the goal. We have a rough ten-year rolling plan, but the goal is not to flood the games market with CDPR games. We just want to make really cool games, and we don’t want to have a ton of IPs either. We’re not planning to grow in that way.” Mayhaps CDPR will be the ones to break free from the barrier that has become developing AAA video games. Probably won’t! But maybe.
