Cathie from Canada: Wrapping up the week: Canada v Poilievre, Canada v USA, ICE Gestapo v USA, Spain v Trump, plus World Cup Stories and shout out to Gaby Dabrowski

Canada v Poilievre: laugh of the week
That white satin cowboy suit seemed to be the final blow to his credibility with Canadian media.

Robert Fife on the latest round of Conservative infighting: “This party is falling apart before our very eyes.”

It would be truly hysterical if the Cons dumped Poilievre and elected a moderate as leader. One who could run to the left of Carney who is steaming further and further right. We used to call them ‘Progressive’ Conservatives. But I won’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

Poilievre has lost the plot now

Apparently Poilievre is so outraged that former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau was is in a Katy Perry video -that he is asking Kid Rock to let him play the piano -as Lethbridge Liberace in his next video.

Canada v USA: laugh of the week
Now California is pleading with Canada to start drinking their wine again. Sorry, not gonna happen…

Earlier this week, a Republican congresswoman huffed and puffed and demanded we buy watered-down American beer. Now a Democrat is asking us to be nice to them and buy their wine. They can whine or shout all they want, but the boycott remains in place. It’s time their political class stood up to Trump. Until then, nothing changes.

The Beaverton never disappoints

And its not just the alcohol that Canadians are objecting to.

Trump is not your problem. Trump is your receipt.

The part Americans still do not seem to understand is that Canada did not change because Trump embarrassed them on the world stage.

We changed because the strategy was openly to make us hurt enough to cave—and too many American institutions, businesses and political leaders were willing to wait and see whether it worked.

The urgency arrived when the pain began circling back through American farms, factories, border towns and tourism.

That is not moral clarity.

That is a failed pressure campaign.

And that is why a different president, a better apology or another signed agreement will not simply restore the old relationship.

Policy can restore access.

It cannot, and will not, restore trust.

Canada is not waiting for America to become reasonable again. We are building around what your choices revealed about how you reason.

I wrote the longer version here:

Canada v USA: we’re going to be pissed off about that bridge
As this thread says, I think we likely had to bribe Trump to get the Gordie Howe Bridge open. And Canada will be pissed about it, not at Carney but at Trump

ICE Gestapo v USA

I’m still not sure what can be done about it, but at least America is very angry now at ICE Gestapo brutality. The latest case:

ICE agents get caught for lies as eye-witnesses and video evidence from a home surveillance video proves their narrative surrounding the horrific shooting and killing 52-year-old Mexican father, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, is filled with falsehoods.

All 3 men inside of the van with Lorenzo Salgado Araujo “‘reiterated that there were never any ICE agents in front of the van…They came in and started shooting from the sides.’”

After a months-long occupation, Minnesota is still recovering from a retribution campaign waged by the federal government.

Now, Minnesota stands with Houston in demanding accountability for the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. This bloodshed cannot be normalized.

And on a side note, Epstein-gate hasn’t gone away either

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez is accusing the Justice Department of withholding unredacted Epstein records and delaying access to evidence that state investigators say they need.

Chrystia Freeland on Trump’s behaviour at NATO: “I think actually that he needs to be called out much more … The comments with regard to Spain were also utterly unacceptable … Trying to appease President Trump just encourages him. What he understands is strength.”

World Cup Stories
I’m glad to see the funny side of the World Cup has revived in spite of Trump’s attempt to kill the vibe.

World Cup breakout star Vozinha has been honoured with a new species of marine mollusk being named in his honour by a Spanish researcher… the Aldisa vozinha 😂👏 #FIFAWorldCup

The song is ending but the melody lingers on

Here’s a shout out to Canada’s extraordinary Gaby Dabrowski

Once again, she is the last Canadian standing at a major tennis tournament. She will be playing in the Ladies Doubles Final at Wimbledon on Sunday. Congrats!

Here are highlights from Dabrowski 🍁 and Stefani (Brazil) winning their semi-final in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 over Aoyama (Japan) and Liang (Chinese Taipei)
