Cathie from Canada: Wednesday Wit: Thanks Carney, Trudeau, Marc Miller, Bryan Adams, Tod Maffin, plus Canada Day stories, political cartoons, some comments on the passing scene, and World Cup Stories

Thanks Carney!

And this time he waited until the pancake was set before he flipped it – I think he’s taken some lessons!

Heads up, Stampeded — PM Carney now appears to have some pancake game!

Thanks Bryan Adams!

Thanks, Tod Mafffin

Some good posts for Canada Day
Check out this thread from historian Craig Baird:

Since it is Canada Day, I thought I would share my personal choices for the Top 10 Canadians.
This is just my own opinion, nothing more. Everyone will have their own Top 10 and that is what makes our history so great 🙂

Hope you enjoy my list!

Baird is now driving across Canada with his sidekick Berton, and posting daily about what he is sees:

Loved that “world’s largest softball” sign. Does anyone still remember the World’s Biggest Hoe episode of Corner Gas?

We should never forget this also

Today is Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.
On this day in 1916, 780 men with the Newfoundland Regiment charged into battle at Beaumont-Hamel. Only 68 soldiers answered roll call the next day.
That sacrifice is honoured at the Beaumont Hamel Memorial.

I’m not crying you’re crying

Some good political cartoons about the SCOTUS decisions

Some comments on the passing scene

CUSMA is ending, sort of, but the melody will linger on

#Breaking: Canada, U.S. and Mexico will not renew free trade agreement ‘in its current form.’ Deal will be subject to annual reviews

From across Canada hear the cry, “who cares?”

We’ve got Eurovision instead…

Eurovision – Europe, Australia, Canada – ultimately now well placed to replace NATO

National identity

Sometimes defining your national identity is really about the friends you may along the way. (Happy Canada Day.) www.thestar.com/opinion/star…

A good commentary from Justin Ling about the importance of the Online Streaming Act to maintain Canadian identity and culture – here’s a gift link.

Some posts about transgender kids in sports

Transgender people in sports is almost as big of an issue as voter fraud. Both are invented issues designed to scare the gullible idiots.

— Anthony Torino (@torinoentertainer.bsky.social) July 1, 2026 at 8:52 AM

at any given time theres a grand sum total of about a couple dozen trans kids playing hs sports spread out across a nation of 350 million. this is what weve been spending years arguing about. a few dozen kids theyll never meet

— Andrew Lawrence (@ndrew.bsky.social) July 1, 2026 at 5:14 AM

I really wish how coverage of laws and court rulings intended to eradicate trans people wouldn’t always end up focusing on how they will effect cis people—but yes this is also a predictably horrific outcome as well, with lots of pedo-MAGAs lining up to volunteer as genital inspectors of young girls.

What a letter this is

Very thankful for this letter to Becky Pepper-Jackson (the 16 year-old trans girl SCOTUS ruled against yesterday) from James Dale, a gay man whose expulsion from the Boy Scouts was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2000.

The majority of men complaining about men playing women’s sports could not beat a female high school basketball player.

MAGA apparently didn’t realize that birthright citizenship has already been US law for 180 years

Every fascist accusation is a confession.

I love watching Americans tell ICE Gestapo to go fuck themselves

Know your rights & assert them. ICE tried to enter a flooring business in Las Vegas, NV without a warrant on June 29 but were denied entry by the owners.
One ICE agent tried to pull out his taser while walking back to his car, but was told fuck off, which he did, because he had no legal authority.

Eating the rich is not just a spectator sport

“There is nothing fiscally responsible about balancing the budget on the backs of working people.”

ZOHRAN says NYC’s budget shrinks the deficit by taxing the rich, not the working class. What a concept!

Trump’s pointless and embarassing spectacles

I’m mad that Fascist Von Fucknuts ruined everything about the 250th of the USA. It should have been a cool opportunity to explore and celebrate a shared history. Instead it’s an algae-smeared wankfest for a bloated despot.

As is this ridiculous fantasy.

World Cup Stories
I love reading all the fan stories

Fervent fan here of DR Congo, whose team I became aware of ten minutes ago.

What are the chances that anyone pointed this out to the Fox News crew at the game?

Folarin Balogun, who is a US citizen because he was born here, scores a go-ahead goal for the US team in a knockout game. Score one for birthright citizenship.

This is like when people become instant Curling experts during the Olympics

Me, 3 hours ago: “What is soccer? Where is it played?”

Me now: “Most egregious red card in football history…no one is calling that on Messi!”
