Cathie from Canada: The Reflecting Pool as Metaphor

The whole Trump administration is summed up by what has happened with that Reflecting Pool. It is a metaphor for everything wrong with Trump.

The following chain of events is pure speculation on my part, but one thing is true: when Trump babbles, his stream-of-consciousness lies often echo the myths and tall tales he is being told by his White House staff and Cabinet, to manipulate him or distract him. These echoes are very obvious when he talks about the Reflecting Pool project. So this is what happened, I think:

1. Keeping Trump distracted with meaningless pointless make-work projects is one of ways the White House staff and Cabinet keep him feeling busy and productive while they get on with looting the country (see: the Rose Garden, the gold crap all over the White House, the walkway to the Oval, the East Wing destruction, the Ballroom, the Kennedy Center, the UFC fight, the Arc d’Trump, the new Air Force One, etc etc.)

2. The Reflecting Pool was just another pointless busy-work project. Nobody knew or cared anything about that pool three months ago. It wasn’t much of a problem either. National Parks just needed to clean out its annual accumulation of debris and it would have been good to go. But White House staff started filling Trump’s ears with lies about the awful state the pool was in, how Obama had ruined it, how Biden had ignored it, only you can fix it sir… and when Trump demurred that he didn’t really care much about the pool, his staff talked up how big it is, its really really big sir, its lots bigger than the Empire State Building really!!!

3. So Trump jumped into it, made it an emergency, didn’t bother with research, didn’t consult anybody about its history or previous maintenance issues, just hired “some pool guy” to paint the pool blue for July 4. Easy peasey!

4. Result: another Trump disaster. #ETTD Everything Trump Touches Dies. Resurfacing a granite pool base 15 blocks long and a block wide is a lot bigger project than just paving a garden and buying some new tables and chairs. And pool paints aren’t all the same. And algae prevention/ drainage technology isn’t simple either. So instead of looking beautiful and pristine, the pool is now ruined. So now Trump has had to hire a “pool cleaner guy” to fix it. But really, nobody can repair it now unless it is drained, scraped, cleaned off and refilled;  that ain’t gonna happen in two weeks before July 4.

I expect their next move will be to throw a tarp over it to hide it, like they did at the Kennedy Center.
Or blame Antifa.

I’m sure Trump will catch the vandals desecrating the Reflecting Pool just about the time that Captain Queeg catches the thieves who absconded with his strawberries.

The extent of Trump’s destruction of Washington, D.C., is truly stunning. It’s the ultimate metaphor.

The Reflecting Pool wasn’t blue.

It was painted blue.

Now the paint is peeling off, revealing what was underneath all along.

There may be a metaphor in there somewhere.

The Reflecting Pool is a metaphor for America and the world rejecting Trump attempts to impose a MAGA agenda.

NYT: First, the new paint job appeared uneven. Then, an algae bloom turned the water an acid green. Now, large chunks of coating are peeling off the basin, creating islands of “American flag blue” alongside patches of pea green in a dark, murky soup.

The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial seems to be rejecting its makeover.

In her substack Super-Probably Relevant Content, Susan Campbell writes

…I am petty and so the angry, bitter part of me is enjoying this KeysTonE KopS approach to the problem, with all of Trump’s bombastic bragging that he will Fix It (just like he “fixed” Iran, eh?). Sadly, this isn’t really all that funny because the mess around the reflecting pool is a metaphor for this administration’s style of leadership. (Did everyone read that the president was recently discovered using Super Glue to affix more fake gold crap in the Oval Office. Who does that?)
So here is the Trumpian Way: See a problem. Paint over the problem, half-ass a solution, or lie and say the problem doesn’t exist, but absolutely do not address the problem.
Keep lying.
Lie some more.
Super Glue some glitter onto the turd and call it a diamond. Eventually, the public will learn to live with both the sparkly turd and the sludge in the pool.

Clips are going viral of the new $14M paint on the Reflecting Pool peeling off just 12 days after the pool reopened.

I’m no biologist, but this thread from a real one makes sense to me:

Here is the solution to the reflecting pool algae problem 🧵
In the meantime, don’t drink that water.

Here is what it all looks like now. At least they painted over the “8647” marking on the lawn.

How much did the #UFC event impact the Ellipse?

This was the view of the Reflecting Pool, the National Mall, and the Ellipse this morning…

Oops, no – I guess that didn’t work out either

So, they tried to paint over the numbers and it seems to be even more readable.

Whoever did this definitely has earned several free cold drink from someone.

Finally because the Reflecting Pool is such a great visual story, cartoonists are having a lot of fun with it.
At the top of this post is Ann Telnaes’ cartoon of Trump as a bottom-feeder in the pool.

Here are some more to enjoy:
