Canadian weightlifter Xavier Lusignan won a bronze medal in the men’s 110kg final on Thursday at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Lusignan, of Mansfield, Que., lifted 159kg in the snatch before a successful attempt of 197kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 356kg.

The Canadian waited in anticipation as Samoa’s Jack Hitila Opeloge had three tries to bump Lusignan off the podium, however none of Opeloge’s attempts at 210kg in the clean and jerk were successful.

Fiji’s Taniela Tuisuva Rainiboi won gold with Games-record totals of 170kg in the snatch and 208kg in the clean and jerk for a combined record of 356kg. England’s Cyrille Tchatchet II rounded out the podium in silver-medal position.

Xavier Lusignan of Mansfield, Que., lifted 159kg in the snatch before a successful attempt of 197kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 356kg, good enough for a bronze medal in the men’s 110kg weightlifting final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

At Scotstoun Stadium, Damian Warner has a lead in the decathlon after three events.

The native of London, Ont., was the fastest among all athletes in the 100-metre heats, finishing in 10.21 seconds and earned 1,044 points. That time would have been a new Games record in the 100m but it was not a legal wind (+3.5 m/s).

2020 Olympic decathlon champion and 2014 Commonwealth Games champion Damian Warner of London, Ont., easily won the men’s 100-metre portion of the decathlon, with a wind-assisted time of 10.21 seconds at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

In the long jump, Warner’s 7.77m was second among all competitors and earned him 1,002 points.

The shot put was the final event of the morning session and the Canadian was fifth with a throw of 13.84m to earn another 719 points. Warner’s total of 2,765 gives him an 80-point lead over his closest competitor, Grenada’s Lindon Victor (2,685). The evening session will feature two more events in the decathlon, the high jump and the 400m.

Warner has a history of success in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games. In 2014, he captured gold here for his first major international title, setting Games records in the 100m and 110m hurdles along the way. After sitting out the Games in 2022, Warner is aiming for another title in the very location where he achieved his landmark first victory 12 years ago.

Other Canadian results on Thursday

• With a third-place finish in his semifinal heat, Canada’s Christopher Morales Williams did not qualify for the men’s 400m final. The 21-year-old from Vaughan, Ont., ran his race in 45.99 seconds, but that time wasn’t enough for the world indoors champion to earn one of the two next-fastest qualifier spots up for grabs.
• Two Canadians advanced to the final of the women’s one mile. Lucia Stafford finished second in her heat in 4:31.27 while Simone Plourde qualified for Saturday’s medal race with a time of 4:38.50. Fellow Canadian Kate Current (4:39.66) did not advance.
• Ottawa’s Lauren Gale qualified for the final of the women’s 400m by running 52.05 in the semifinals.
• Tatiana Aholou, of Laval, Que., will race in the final of the women’s 100m hurdles after running her heat in a time of 12.91 seconds. Fellow Canadian Mariam Abdul-Rashid (12.98) did not advance.
• The Canadian men’s track cycling sprint team of Cole Dempster, Tyler Rorke, and James Hedgcock finished fifth in qualifying (44.131) and will not race for a medal.
• In bowls, Canada’s Kelly McKerihen improved to a 2-1 record in women’s singles after a tiebreaker victory over England’s Katherine Rednall (5-6, 8-5, 1-0). McKerihen’s has another match on Thursday, coming against Daphne Arthur-Almond of the Falkland Islands at 12:15 p.m. ET.
