Canada announces new sovereign loan for the Republic of Moldova

September 17, 2024 – Ottawa, Canada – Global Affairs Canada

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has caused financial strain on the Republic of Moldova as they welcomed a substantial influx of refugees from Ukraine.

Today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, and the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that Canada will provide the Republic of Moldova with a sovereign loan of $120 million over 10 years.

Canada’s support will help co-finance a World Bank Development Policy Operation loan aimed at supporting the resilience of families and Ukrainian refugees and fostering sustainable economic growth and climate resilience in the Republic of Moldova.

This announcement comes as the Moldova Partnership Platform meets today in Chisinau, with representation from Canada by Ambassador Gavin Buchan. The Platform, launched in 2022 by France, Germany and Romania, coordinates international efforts to address the significant internal and external challenges the Republic of Moldova has been tackling since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The commitments made and the valuable assistance provided by partners within the Platform have helped the Republic of Moldova to strengthen its democracy and bolster its resilience.
