When my husband and I moved into our new-to-us-but-very-old home this summer, I knew we’d need to update a few things. Specifically, the toilets. The house was built in 1952, and while the toilets were clean and fully functional, they’ve been around far longer than I have and have seen more butts than I feel comfortable with.

The original toilet seats were made of wood, which was charming and vintage—I fully imagine that, at one point, they were paired with those fuzzy pink toilet covers. Still, after 75 years, both the toilets and the new homeowners (us) deserved a refresh. Enter TUSHY.

What Is TUSHY?

TUSHY is a modern bidet company founded in 2015. Its original bidet was designed to attach to an existing toilet, making bidet use more accessible without requiring a separate bathroom fixture. What Are the Benefits of a Bidet?

The most obvious benefit is that water can clean more effectively than dry toilet paper. The Cleveland Clinic notes that bidets can remove trace amounts of fecal matter and may be gentler on the skin than wiping, which can cause irritation. They can also be easier to use for people with mobility limitations.

Personally, I’ve found bidets to be life-changing for hygiene, especially during menstruation and postpartum. Water is so much gentler on delicate skin than toilet paper, and a bidet can also save money since you need far less toilet paper for wiping.

Simply put, I feel cleaner.

Reviewing TUSHY’s ‘Wave’ Bidet

TUSHY’s current lineup includes non-electric attachments like the Classic—which we bought for our old rental because it’s so easy to install—the warm-water Spa 3.0, non-electric bidet seats like the Wave and Oasis, electric seats including the Cloud, Cloud+, Ace, and Aura, and the Eau smart toilet.

For the main bathroom in our home, we opted for the Wave. This is the family bathroom, shared between me, my husband, and our toddler. We may try one of the fancier bidets in the guest bath when we renovate in the very far-off future (holy mortgage payments).

The Wave is a $169 non-electric bidet seat that replaces your existing toilet seat, so there’s no outlet or battery required. It’s HSA/FSA eligible and comes in different toilet seat sizes, including options for elongated toilets, and the control knob is available in two finishes: Platinum and Bamboo. It also has separate front and rear wash nozzles, adjustable water pressure, a soft-close seat and lid (something I didn’t know I needed with a toddler), and a quick-release design for easier cleaning. Its nozzles even self-clean before and after use. Love that.

Most importantly, it looks like an actual toilet seat, not a bathroom gadget. I really didn’t want to modernize the bathroom too much since it has so much ’50s charm. This was an easy upgrade that didn’t change the aesthetic.

Installing ‘The Wave’ Bidet

One thing I love about TUSHY is how much they emphasize an easy installation. The brand touts a 10-minute DIY install, and I’d say that’s pretty accurate. You don’t need to hire a professional, and many of their bidets are rental-friendly, meaning they can be installed and removed without making permanent changes to your toilet. All you really need are a few basic tools and the ability to turn your toilet’s water supply on and off.

To put that to the test, we installed our new bidet during our evening routine while simultaneously making dinner for our toddler. Multitasking at its finest. Call us crazy, but we got the bidet installed, the spaghetti made, and no tears were shed—all in time for bathtime.

I did enlist my husband to help with the installation since he’s handier than I am, and, frankly, someone needed to entertain the toddler. TUSHY makes the process incredibly straightforward, with an included instruction manual and a QR code that takes you to installation videos. The steps are simple and, honestly, pretty boring: unpack the TUSHY, shut off the water supply, remove your old toilet seat, put on the new toilet seat, connect the water line, secure everything in place, and turn the water back on.

If you can boil water and make a pot of pasta, you can install a TUSHY.

Final Thoughts

At $169, I think the TUSHY Wave is absolutely worth it. I rave about it to friends and have encouraged pretty much everyone in my family to get one. We still keep a roll of toilet paper in the bathroom, but we use far less than we would without a bidet—which feels especially good given how expensive and resource-intensive toilet paper can be.

More than anything, though, a bidet just makes going to the bathroom more comfortable and, in my experience, cleaner. And if you want to go all out, TUSHY makes fancier versions with warm water, night lights, and plenty of fun, spa-like features, too.

For us, though, the Wave is exactly what we needed. It’s simple, easy to use, and has all the features we actually want. Best of all, it made our old 1952 toilets feel a little newer, cleaner, and much more like our own.
