Budget commitments, affordability and backbench bills in the spotlight

What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

As FINANCE members continue to dig into the details of Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s latest pitch to roll out measures introduced in his inaugural budget last fall, three ministers are booked in for back-to-back appearances this morning: Northern and Arctic Affairs Minister Rebecca Chartrand, Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu and Secretary of State for Defence Procurement Stephen Fuhr. (10 a.m.)

INDIGENOUS AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS members will hear from Northwest Territories finance minister Caroline Wawzonek, Yukon energy minister Ted Laking and L’Île-d’Anticosti mayor Hélène Boulanger, among others, as they take a closer look at “affordability challenges in Northern Canada.” (3:30 p.m.)

ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT members will start the week by surveying representatives of the Canadian Propane Association, Clean Energy Canada, Greater Montreal Climate Funds and other industry and advocacy groups on home energy retrofits (3:30 p.m.)

Also this afternoon: CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION members will examine ongoing efforts aimed at “attracting and empowering global talent to strengthen Canada’s economy” during a roundtable discussion with representatives of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, Roseview Global Innovator, University of Waterloo, Comact, Kingston Economic Development Corporation and Universities Canada. (3:30 p.m.)

Rounding out the roster, a trio of backbench bills are also working their respective way through their designated committee, including Liberal MP Abdelhaq Sari’s proposal to  “establish a national framework to promote the durability of electronic products and essential home appliances” at INDUSTRY AND TECHNOLOGY (11 a.m.), Liberal MP Parm Bains’ pitch to set up a “national framework respecting skilled trades and labour mobility” at HUMAN RESOURCES, SKILLS AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (11 a.m.) and their Liberal caucus colleague Gurbax Sani’s call for a “national framework to improve food price transparency” at AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD (3:30 p.m.)
