British Airways Has Axed Airbus A380 Flights On 8 Routes Over The Years: Full List

British Airways has 12 Airbus A380s, although not all are currently active. Registered as G-XLEA, ch-aviation shows that the first frame was delivered in July 2013. The inaugural commercial service took place the following month from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) for crew training and familiarization. The first long-haul service was to Los Angeles.

BA’s final superjumbo (G-XLEL) arrived a decade ago, in June 2016. Like the other 11 aircraft, this frame currently has 469 seats. However, they will all be reconfigured with a much higher-premium, 421-seat layout. The retrofitting is sorely needed, as the equipment’s hard product is outdated. This process is partly why BA’s double-decker flights from LHR are down by 27% this winter.

The oneworld member’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio has been explored. This compared the operator’s double-decker quadjet network from August 2013 to August 2026 with what’s due to exist between September 2026 and July 2027. This network reflects what is known as of August 28 and certainly may change.

The findings are summarized below. The list does not include Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), as BA’s double-deckers will return there on September 6. However, it does include Dubai International Airport (DXB), as the airline has removed the type from that route during the upcoming winter. While unconfirmed, the equipment may return in winter 2027/2028.

FRA and Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD) saw BA’s A380s on a very time-limited basis for crew training and familiarization. Other airlines did the same elsewhere. For example, Singapore Airlines flew the superjumbo from SIN to Kuala Lumpur ahead of the type re-entering service following the COVID-19 pandemic. BA flew to Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) for an entirely different reason: to assist partner Qatar Airways during the World Cup.

Emirates, rather than BA, was the first airline to fly the A380 to ORD. The Gulf giant did so only once, in 2016, to test infrastructure. There are several other examples of where Emirates flew the superjumbo on a one-off or otherwise limited basis but did not subsequently use the type regularly.

Only BA provided the airport’s only regular double-decker service. Cirium shows that flights existed on a summer seasonal basis between May 2018 and October 2019. After the pandemic-driven pause, the type returned in 2022. It operated on a year-round basis until December 2023.

Like other routes, BA flew the equipment to ORD because of the huge overall demand (local and connections) and high premium demand. The double-decker quadjet was deployed on both BA282 and BA297 from LHR. BA297 had seven in ten departures. Most of the time, this specific flight left the UK’s busiest airport at 4:05 PM and got to ORD at 6:45 PM local time.

The Middle East’s busiest airport represents a special situation. Due to the ongoing war in Iran and BA retrofitting its superjumbos with 421 seats, DXB will not see the carrier’s largest aircraft in the upcoming winter. Usually, it’d fly daily. It’d be on BA107, which arrives in the Gulf around midnight. BA106 then departs at 2:15 AM, getting back to Europe at 6:25 AM.

Even without BA’s double-deckers, LHR-DXB will remain the world’s most-served A380-operated airport pair in winter 2026/2027. This is, of course, entirely because of Emirates, whose quadjets will run six times a day to the UK’s busiest airport. It’ll also have three daily A380 flights to London Gatwick Airport (LGW).
