Brewers draft Texas State baseball’s all-time home run leader Chase Mora as a pitcher

Two Texas State baseball players were selected Sunday in the 2026 MLB draft. The Milwaukee Brewers picked Chase Mora 281st overall in the ninth round while the Houston Astros took Rashawn Galloway 481st overall in the 16th round.

Mora is the Bobcats’ all-time leader in home runs, breaking current New York Yankees infielder Paul Goldschmidt’s record this spring. But he’s unlikely to do much hitting with the Brewers, who drafted him as a right-handed pitcher despite Mora having pitched only 1⅓ innings in college. His last appearance came in May during a blowout loss to UTSA. He struck out a batter and allowed no runs in one frame.

Mora, 22, initially came to Texas State in 2022. He told the American-Statesman in May that most schools wanted him as a pitcher – he reportedly was clocked in the low 90s at Tomball High School – and the Bobcats were one of a few programs willing to let him be a two-way player. After recovering from Tommy John surgery in the fall, he had an all-time freshman season at the plate, hitting 17 homers. He never quite recaptured that form throughout the rest of his career, but still had several defining moments, including a go-ahead, two-run blast that sealed Texas State’s 5-4 win over USC in the College Station regional.

Galloway played right field for Texas State as a senior, but the Astros drafted him as a catcher. He spent most of his college career dealing with injuries, finally breaking out in 2026 as the Bobcats’ best all-around hitter. He recorded a .318 batting average and a .948 on-base plus slugging percentage, striking out 23 times in 264 at-bats.

Galloway hit 11 homers as a senior, but will likely hit more for contact than power in the pros. His defensive utility will be useful as he navigates his way through the minor leagues.
