Arch Manning entered the 2025 season with the kind of expectations that follow a quarterback with his last name. He was viewed as a potential No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, a Heisman Trophy contender, and the face of a Texas Longhorns team expected to compete for a national championship.

Seven games into the 2026 season, those expectations are starting to look more like a burden than a reflection of his performance.

Texas has lost back-to-back games to Oklahoma and Florida, dropping from the No. 1 spot in the rankings to No. 19. Manning has struggled to find consistency, and head coach Steve Sarkisian is beginning to explore his options. Backup quarterback KJ Lacey is expected to receive additional first-team reps ahead of Saturday’s showdown against No. 7 Ole Miss.

Sarkisian has maintained that Manning remains the starter, but the message is clear: The Longhorns need more from their quarterback.

Saturday’s ranked matchup could be Manning’s most important opportunity yet to prove he deserves to remain QB1 in Austin. With Texas’ national championship hopes already under pressure, another disappointing performance could force Sarkisian to make a change.

Arch Manning needs to live up to the hype

There is no denying Manning’s potential. Many expect him to follow in the footsteps of his uncles Peyton and Eli Manning. However, a recognizable name and impressive recruiting pedigree do not guarantee success at the college level.

Manning has delivered moments that remind everyone why the hype exists, but those flashes have been overshadowed by costly mistakes and inconsistent execution. Through six games, he has thrown for 1,295 yards and 11 touchdowns while committing five interceptions. His struggles extend beyond the passing game, too. Despite expectations that his mobility would provide another dimension to the offense, Manning has rushed for only 108 yards, averaging 2.2 yards per carry and zero touchdowns. These numbers highlight the disconnect between expectations and production.

The biggest concern is how Manning’s mistakes have affected Texas in critical moments. Turnovers against Oklahoma and a costly fumble against Florida helped turn winnable games into losses. Texas cannot afford to keep giving opponents opportunities while its offense struggles to establish consistency.

Manning does not need to play like his uncles to justify his place on the roster. He needs to make better decisions, trust what he sees, and demonstrate that he can lead a championship-caliber team.

KJ Lacey is looming in the dark

Quarterbacks need competition, and Manning still has the opportunity to respond before Saturday’s kickoff.

Lacey’s increased involvement changes the conversation. Texas is no longer just waiting for Manning to rediscover his form. The coaching staff is preparing another option in case the offense continues to stall. Texas cannot prioritize one player’s development over the team’s chances of winning, particularly when its margin for error is shrinking.

Lacey still has limited game experience, so replacing Manning would come with risks of its own. But if the redshirt freshman demonstrates better command of the offense and gives the Longhorns a spark, Sarkisian will have to consider whether a change offers the team a better chance to win.

Manning can prevent that conversation from becoming more serious by showing tangible improvement against Ole Miss.

The Ole Miss game could change everything

Saturday’s matchup may not be a final opportunity for Manning to prove himself, but it may be his clearest chance to quiet the growing doubts surrounding his job.

Ole Miss presents a major test against a ranked opponent, and Texas needs its quarterback to handle pressure without making the mistakes that have defined recent losses. That starts with slowing the game down and taking what the defense gives him rather than forcing throws that put the team at risk. Manning also needs to use his legs more effectively when opportunities arise.

A loss could push Texas outside the Top 25 and further damage its postseason outlook. More importantly for Manning, another poor performance would give Sarkisian even more reason to evaluate Lacey as a potential starter.

Texas recruited Manning to help deliver championships, not to remain committed to him regardless of results. The program has too much talent and too much at stake to ignore continued struggles at quarterback.
