Black Clover anime’s return sets the stage for its most ambitious arc yet

Black Clover has been off television for several years, but its long-awaited return couldn’t arrive at a more pivotal point in the story. The anime ended in 2021 after adapting much of Black Clover by Yūki Tabata, leaving fans waiting as the manga pulled further ahead. Now, the series returns with a new season that dives into one of the franchise’s biggest turning points, shifting from the kingdom-spanning conflicts that defined the original run into an all-out struggle against seemingly impossible odds.

Anime Expo 2026 attendees were some of the first in the world to see what new director Ayataka Tanemura is bringing to the series after taking over for Tatsuya Yoshihara. Tanemura has worked on several Black Clover projects previously, including the feature-length film Sword of the Wizard King, and looks to breathe his own style into the second season by pushing production limits to the extreme with a “powered-up,” highly intensified version of the series. Judged by the premiere episode, those sensibilities have been matched tenfold.

For newcomers, Black Clover follows Asta, a loud, relentlessly optimistic orphan living in the Clover Kingdom — a world where nearly everyone can wield magic. Asta is the lone exception, born without a trace of magical power. Rather than giving up on his dream of becoming the Wizard King, the kingdom’s strongest mage, he develops overwhelming physical strength before receiving a mysterious five-leaf grimoire that grants him Anti-Magic, allowing him to negate the spells of even the most powerful opponents. Alongside his rival and lifelong friend Yuno, a magical prodigy blessed with extraordinary talent, Asta joins the Magic Knights and eventually finds a home with the Black Bulls, the kingdom’s rowdiest squad of misfits. Over the course of the first anime, the group grows from an unruly collection of outcasts into some of the Clover Kingdom’s greatest defenders, battling terrorists, elves seeking revenge, and devils whose influence stretches across the continent.

Black Clover season 2 picks up after the devastating events of the Spade Kingdom Raid arc, where Asta and his allies face the rulers of the Spade Kingdom and some of the strongest devils ever encountered. Although the immediate threat was overcome, the conflict exposed just how fragile the balance of power had become. New enemies emerge with abilities that challenge everything the Magic Knights understand about strength, while Asta himself faces increasing scrutiny because of the demonic power he wields.

The episode kicks off at Spade Kingdom, setting up the show’s background events before moving to Clover Kingdom. Tenemura’s intense and kinetic action is spellbinding right from the start. Training sequences with Asta and Liebe under Nacht Faust are the main focus of the season opener, allowing Tenemura to test the limits of animation with high-velocity, cinematic fighting. Nacht uses his Shadow Magic to overwhelm Asta and Liebe, forcing them to synchronize their abilities. The episode serves as our first taste of Asta’s attempt to unlock his Devil Union Form within a two-day time limit before the raid begins against the Dark Triad.

Nacht’s Mana Zone ability is the strongest element in episode one, featuring this intense moment of rich black and white imagery as Asta and Liebe attempt their hardest to stave off the threat. It’s a visual treat that fans may well lose their minds over, especially after the duo correctly perform their Devil Union Form for a mere second. Tenemura knocks this scene out of the park with a level of polish that makes the long wait for future episodes well worth it.

Without venturing too far into spoiler territory, later episodes further adapt the manga’s Final Wizard King storyline, introducing fresh political tensions, powerful new foes, and battles that push both Asta and the Black Bulls beyond anything seen in the original series. It’s a natural jumping-on point for returning fans while setting the stage for what promises to be the anime’s most consequential chapter yet.

Black Clover season 2 premieres on Crunchyroll this October.
