Bethesda’s Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters won’t stop the modders who’ve already spent years recreating the RPGs in Fallout 4

With Bethesda having begun to dip their fingers into the remaster bucket in recent years, some modders who’d decided long before that to get the ball rolling on such things themselves have had to reckon with the idea that official siblings of their passion projects could be in the works. It happened last year with Skyblivion and Oblivion Remastered, now it’s happened for the crew behind The Capital Wasteland Project, an effort to recreate Fallout 3 in Fallout 4, and Fallout 4: New Vegas.

Thankfully, both teams of modders have made clear they plan to keep on trucking with their efforts following the confirmation of the official remasters.

“The F4CW Team is incredibly excited to see Fallout 3 officially receiving a remaster and we can’t wait to see what they have in store,” the modders behind The Capital Wasteland Project, which also goes by Fallout 4: The Capital Wasteland, wrote in a statement following Bethesda’s future plans reveal.

“That said, we’d also like to reassure our community that F4CW is continuing development,” they continued. “Our project has been a community-driven passion project for almost a full decade now, and we’re committed to seeing that our work, creativity and dedication continue! We still have plenty to share and we look forward to bringing everyone more updates on F4CW in the future! We’d also like to remind everyone that F4CW is not affiliated with Bethesda Games Studios, and we are not involved in the official remasters in any capacity.”

Meanwhile, the modders behind Fallout 4: New Vegas have acknowledged via Discord that “this will not effect project development in any way.” “The team’s stance has always been that if a remake or remaster should come out, their progress will not halt,” a moderator going by Addison wrote. “We understand the concern, both of cancellation and of wasted time, but please do not worry. We’re just as excited for the remaster as we are to continue working.” Current project lead Metamoth has chimed in to back up that assertion.

While last week’s rundown straight from the horse’s mouth of what Bethesda are working on is a change from what’s been the studio’s traditional modus operandi (likely one spurred by Microsoft’s recent mass layoffs), the Capital Wasteland Project modders likely weren’t caught totally of guard by the idea of an official Fallout 3 remaster, since one was mentioned in document leaked during Microsoft’s court battle with the FTC a few years ago. Regardless, as was the case with Skyblivion, pending any command from Bethesda to stop right there, it’d have made little sense for the Capital Wasteland team to have suddenly brought an end to their work following the official remaster’s confirmation.

For one, it’s not as if this is a modding project which is still all hopes and dreams. Back in 2022, the group released their recreation of Fallout 3’s Point Lookout DLC – complete with full worldspace and quests – in Fallout 4. Since that point, they’ve regularly put out the odd standalone weapon, random object replacer, or lunar lander, plus teasers of their ongoing work recreating the environments of the base game and its The Pitt DLC.

While the Fallout 4: New Vegas folks have been a bit more quiet in recent years, they have still released some standalone versions of the mod’s guns.

So, as with Skyblivion, it’s great to see both projects allowed and willing to keep on chugging with their own interpretation of games their creators love.
