Cross-training — certainly a hot buzzword right now — means combining multiple forms of exercise to help develop a specific component of fitness, depending on your wellness objectives. This mode of working out aims to reduce the risk of injury, challenges your endurance, and improves overall physical and mental health. CrossFit is one of the most popular types of cross-training globally, but it could also involve a hybrid of cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises.

While your gym’s weight racks and machines may look intimidating at first, the rewards of cross-training are many, and there’s never a bad time to start. With that, the shoes you’re wearing for the workouts in question should be given as much thought as the routine itself.

Whether you’re engaging in treadmill work or alternating intervals of rowing with weightlifting, the mechanics of your chosen pair of sneakers can either optimize your performance or hinder your results and make injury a real possibility. Ideally, you want to find shoes that strike a balance between supportive and responsive: cushioning the impact of a gym’s surfaces while providing the energy return you deserve.

At News, we consider ourselves casual athletes, and many people on our team have even started regularly visiting Orangetheory and other top cross-training studios as of late. That being said, in the before times, we tended not to pay close attention to the shoes we were wearing for the task at hand: throwing on our beat-up sneakers and not thinking twice.

Soon, our joints began to ache and our feet were walking away from those classes in a fatigued state, lacking proper support while absorbing all the shock of the running and weightlifting. Switching to the best shoes for cross-training made a world of difference, as the trainers not only doled out more underfoot softness and stability but also confidence and peace of mind (translation: We could focus more on staying in that optimal heart rate zone without the uncomfortable sensations in our lower bodies.)

No matter if you’re on the market for new women’s cross-training sneakers after completely wearing out your go-to set or want to learn more about the category before investing in your first, below is a mix of tested recommendations and fan favorites — for achieving all your fitness goals and receiving many a gym compliment in the process.

EDITOR’S PICK

On Cloudpulse Next Sneaker

Backed by Helion superfoam and On’s beloved CloudTec cushioning, the Cloudpulse Next is designed for dynamic movements in various cross-training scenarios, as well as all-day wear. The sneaker’s wide platform and heel clip are also constructed for added stability during your most intense workouts.

What we thought: The Swiss running giant’s Cloudpulse Next shoe is an incredible choice for cross-training, and it has proven to be reliable even outside of athletic settings. I found the sneaker’s fit to be snug enough for a locked-in feel, and yet it also avoided excess compression. The Cloudpulse Next is impressively lightweight and cushioned for runs on the treadmill, not to mention stable for all the squats, planks, and kettlebell swings I carried out. I loved its minimalist and sleek appearance that easily transitioned from workout studio to coffee shop, making this one of the most adaptable products I’ve tested.

RUNNER-UP

Adidas Adizero Dropset Pro Training Shoe

Adidas’ latest version of its signature training shoe is the most hybrid-focused out of the Dropset lineup. LightstrikePro cushioning gives the model a featherlike weight of around seven ounces and is made for more comfortable, faster sprints; Climacool tech, meanwhile, keeps feet dry and cool, regardless of how much you’re sweating. This sneaker is also equipped with a Lighttraxion Continental rubber outsole to maintain good traction on the treadmill belt, artificial turf, and beyond.

What we thought: This is the lightest sneaker I own (truly, it feels almost weightless). I appreciated its comfiness from the very first wear and the fact that the toe box leaves ample room for people with a wider forefoot. I even started taking the shoe on all my errand runs and travels, too, as it’s the furthest thing from bulky or burdensome. For bonus points, it comes with an extra set of shoelaces in the reverse color, adding more excitement and personality to my gym outfits.

BEST VALUE

Reebok Nano Gym 2.0 Training Shoe

The Nano Gym 2.0, relative to its predecessor, has a more specialized Floatpulse foam that results in greater responsiveness, plus a more streamlined design and a lower collar for an easier slip-on. Similar to the original, the rubber outsole here boasts gym-specific flex grooves that react where and when you need the most support.

What we thought: This is the most cost-efficient pick in our roundup that still guarantees premium performance. I thought its weight could be cut down slightly, though this was not a dealbreaker. The pair made me confident in my strides and steady enough to hit those heavier reps. Another advantage? Its straightforward (but never boring) aesthetic.

BEST FOR WEIGHTLIFTING

Reebok Nano X5 Edge Training Shoe

Reebok’s Nano X5 Edge is a match made in heaven for heavy lifting and HIIT workouts, benefitting from a 3D FlexWeave upper that secures the foot while aligning with its organic motions and a DualResponse EVA midsole to neutralize impact during cardio work.

What we thought: This pair felt the most stable when I was doing weighted exercises on the studio floor. Even at first glance, the sneaker’s shape is distinctly flatter than average, and it has a firmer hold once you put it on. In this case, a heavier composition was a welcome aspect that propped up my stance amidst tougher intervals, but I’d probably swap out the shoe if running was my primary focus.

MOST STYLISH

On Cloudsurfer Max Sneaker

The Cloudsurfer Max isn’t a new addition to On’s repertoire, but it’s one we keep coming back to before StairClimber sessions or elevated treadmill walks. Not one but two layers of cushioning inject plushness into every footfall, just as an improved eyestay layout ensures your foot won’t be sliding out of the shoe as you bump up speed and incline level alike.

What we thought: For over a year, I’ve been religiously wearing the Cloudsurfer Max sneaker on outdoor runs and to the gym after work. It has never once disappointed me thus far, instead feeling like a natural extension of my body and generously supplying the kind of cushioning that’s needed when I’m pushing myself to my limits. From casual jog to Bulgarian split squat, the shoe makes all my actions smooth like butter. In the off-white colorway, it also works exceptionally well under every ensemble I own: dresses included.

BEST FOR WIDE FEET

New Balance Ellipse Shoe

Sold in widths from Narrow to Extra Wide, this is the best cross-training shoe for wide feet that you can currently buy online. New Balance’s Ellipse further distinguishes itself from the crowd with a seven-ounce weight; bouncy, forgiving Fresh Foam X cushioning; and reflective details that treat workout OOTDs to subtle oomph.

What we thought: When I know I’m going to be rotating between the elliptical or cycling bike and the free weight area, I lace up the Ellipse. The shoe is an overachiever in multiple categories, winning major points courtesy of its sturdy grip (especially on moving surfaces), thermoregulation in the upper, tailored-to-you fit, and all-around comfort for going the distance, literally. New Balance promises a “trampoline-like feel” with this under-$150 cross-training sneaker, and I’ve experienced nothing short of that.

BEST FOR NARROW FEET

Nike Free Metcon 7 Shoe

Deemed Nike’s most versatile training shoe, this top-of-the-line cross-training sneaker features upgrades like reengineered midfoot containment, webbed lacing, and added durability around both the tip of the toe and the sides. The main draw continues to be the Swoosh brand’s Nike Free technology, responsible for that flexibility you so crave and those quick reactions you so need to finish class as the strongest version of yourself.

All in all: Nike knows how crucial foot protection is for cross-training athletes, which explains why the Free Metcon 7 is made with your body’s best interests in mind. Its foam system is unparalleled and alone worth the investment — being firmer in the heel and softer in the midsole so as to “let you switch from dynamic to strength-based movements” at will, per Nike. You’ll soon realize that this shoe can, and will, work as hard as you do.
