Valorant star Benjy ‘BENJYFISHY’ Fish has discussed Team Heretics’ tough 2026 season and is looking forward to the new VCT changes putting a spotlight on other teams.

In 2027, the Valorant esports scene is going to look a little bit different to how it currently does. Moving forward, open qualifying tournaments will be held prior to the annual kick-off event, as well as Masters and cups.

From the get-go, eight partner teams will still qualify for events, but will be joined by four teams from the open qualifiers – bringing an air of unpredictability and openness to things that maybe hasn’t been around for a while.

It is something that fans are looking forward to, no doubt, but it also has piqued the interest of players. “It will put more eyes on tier 2 and unknown players, which I think is always good,” Team Heretics’ Benjy ‘BENJYFISHY’ Fish told Dexerto. “It will cause a lot of upsets and unknown players getting to prove themself.”

Reflecting on Heretics’ 2026 season

The former Fortnite esports champion has made a name for himself in the Valorant scene over the last few years, helping Team Heretics claim their first title in 2024 and capture the 2025 EWC trophy too. Quite simply, he has become a multi-esports star.

Yet last season, Heretics fell below expectations set by fans after finally claiming gold from VCT EMEA stage one. However, they failed to defend that Esports World Cup crown and couldn’t break into the top four in other tournaments. 

“Honestly, our performances this year were not up to our standard. Although we won EMEA, I was disappointed with how we played in London considering it was my home tournament,” Benjy said. 

“I think it came down to a number of reasons; it wasn’t just one problem that made us perform bad, but I think our mental was not as strong this year as it was in the past.”

BENJYFISHY looking to be more ‘confident’ moving forward

With Heretics missing out on Valorant Champions Shanghai, it gives the team an extended off-season. 

“I think for me, I just want to focus on grinding the game and being confident in my ability,” the Heretics said about his off-season work. “I know how high of a ceiling I can hit and I just need to work towards it.”

He’d also “be happy” if Riot decided to buff the current group of Sentinels. Though, Benjy is also looking to see Neon hit with a “small” nerf at some point.

Otherwise, he isn’t working on rebuilding too much during some time away from competition, and he won’t be changing up anything about his set-up.

“For me, the most important thing about a mouse is that I do not think about it while I’m playing and for it to be an extension of my hand. It’s very important for me to perform well; if I find a mouse uncomfortable, then it can distract me,” he said.

Logitech G’s Superlight 2 has become his trusted mouse of choice. “It’s the mouse I’m the most comfortable on,” Benjy noted. “For me, there are only positives to using it, and I don’t like to change what works.”
