Takeo Kamai joined the UK bank’s local securities subsidiary as head of high-touch sales trading, it said in a statement on Monday. The company also appointed Warren Kim to the newly established team. Bloomberg News reported the hiring plans in June.
Japan’s stock market revival has rekindled interest among foreign financial firms to expand equity operations in the country. High-touch trading typically involves sales traders handling client orders personally. Barclays retreated from the business in Japan in 2016 as part of an Asia-wide cost-cutting initiative, focusing instead on electronic trading, derivatives sales and services for hedge funds.
“Japan is one of the world’s most important equity markets and remains a strategic focus for Barclays,” Paul Johnson, head of equities for Asia-Pacific, said in the statement.
Kamai most recently led CLSA’s execution services in Japan, including high-touch, program and electronic trading. Kim oversaw the Chinese firm’s offshore sales trading in Japan.
