Baldur’s Gate 2 remake reportedly in development at Wizards of the Coast, possibly alongside a revamp of the first game

A remake of Baldur’s Gate 2 is reportedly in the works at Wizards of the Coast, potentially as part of efforts to remake both of the first two entries in the classic RPG series.

This is according to a report from Party Controllers Gamer, who claim it’s likely both Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2 get the remake treatment prior to the release of Baldur’s Gate 4. Original Baldur’s Gate 2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens, currently a creative lead on Wizards of the Coast subsidiary Archetype Entertainment’s Mass Effecty RPG Exodus, is reportedly working on the BG2 remake.

I’ve asked Wizards of the Coast for comment.

Assuming these remakes are in the work, the assumption would be that they’d make more dramatic tweaks than the enhanced editions of BG and BG2 released in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Especially given the fact those enhanced editions got a patch in February this year, meaning they’ve not exactly been left to rot.

That aside, Wizards of the Coast opting to mine some nostalgia while plans for the Baldur’s Gate entry that’ll take the baton from Baldur’s Gate 3 are worked out. That fourth game, of course, will see a new studio face the tough task of following Larian’s blockbuster success on BG3, with the latter now busy working on Divinity.

It couldn’t hurt to try and make the older entries even more accessible to newbies while trying to drag even more folks via the Baldur’s Gate TV series announced earlier this year. Eventually, though, Wizards will have to deliver a Baldur’s Gate 4 if they’re not to let the series’ momentum dissipate into nothingness like a goblin tactically shoved off a cliff.
