The Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), announced over $47 million in funding for five projects, to support economic growth, climate resilience, food security, and human rights projects in Guatemala and across Latin America and the Caribbean.
Project: Nourishing Resilience: Improving Climate Resilience and Food and Nutrition Security in Central America
Partner: World Food Programme (WFP)
Funding: $18 million (2025 to 2031)
The project will enhance food security and nutrition through a multi-pronged approach that combines climate-smart agricultural practices with improved governance capacities, financial inclusion and leadership opportunities for smallholder farmers, with activities tailored for each country’s reality.
Project: Inclusive Business Ecosystems in Areas Affected by Migration in Guatemala (NIM KAT)
Partner: CECI
Funding: $6.15 million (2025 to 2030)
The project aims to help young Indigenous women who receive remittances to learn about finances, to build businesses or enhance their employability to improve their social well-being, and to increase their leadership skills and participate actively in their communities.
Project: Promoting Comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Rights and Combating Discrimination Against Women in Situations of Vulnerability
Partner: UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)
Funding: $5 million (2025 to 2029)
The project will work with government, justice sector actors, members of congress, the Executive and civil society to ensure that Indigenous and Afro-descendant women, women with disabilities, LGBTQI+ individuals, and women human rights defenders, are able to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights and enjoy a life free from discrimination. The project also will increase the inclusive, gender-responsive and accountable application of international human rights norms and standards by relevant duty-bearers in Guatemala.
Project: Defending Democracy for a Safer, Sustainable Prosperous Hemisphere
Partner: ParlAmericas
Funding: $10.2 million (2026 to 2031)
This project seeks to protect and strengthen democracy across 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It will support more effective policy making among parliamentarians to advance shared prosperity, bolster economic resilience, and address threats to democratic governance and hemispheric stability. It will also promote more inclusive participation of women, youth, and civil society actors in decision-making.
Project: Economic and Social (Re)Integration and Protection of Women and Girls Affected by Irregular Migration and Forced Displacement
Partner: International Organization for Migration (IOM)
Funding: $8 million (2026 to 2030)
The initiative aims to improve the economic and social reintegration/integration and protection of women and girls who are migrating, have returned, or are at risk of irregular migration and/or displacement in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. The initiative will strengthen government services, promote economic participation – including through alliances with the private sector, and build institutional capacity to address the root causes of irregular migration and displacement.
