Backgrounder: Additional support for Ukraine

Canada’s funding for NATO’s Comprehensive Assistance Package (CAP) for Ukraine is intended to support Ukraine’s ability to provide for its own security through immediate, short-term and non-lethal military assistance.

Today’s announcement by the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, that Canada is providing an additional $35 million to the CAP for Ukraine, brings the combined contributions from the Department of National Defence and Global Affairs Canada to approximately $180 million. This makes Canada the sixth-largest donor to the CAP for Ukraine.

By contributing to the CAP for Ukraine, Canada is supporting NATO’s commitment to providing practical assistance to bolster Ukraine’s ability to defend itself, strengthen its institutions and advance its long-term alignment with NATO standards.

Canadian funding has supported Ukraine’s communications systems, medical equipment, logistics and engineering tools, generators and power systems, personal protective equipment and measures to counter aerial threats.

Canada supports the CAP for Ukraine by reallocating funds it previously provided to NATO.
