Australian Open as it happened: Alex de Minaur cruises into quarters; Ukraine’s Oliynykova targets Sabalenka again

MELBOURNE, Australia — World No. 1s Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka made light work of their fourth round Australian Open opponents to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. It wasn’t so simple for top-ranked American Coco Gauff, who was made to fight deep into a deciding set against 19th-seed Karolina Muchova.

The Day 8 evening session was headlined by Australia’s Alex de Minaur who dominated Alexander Bublik. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev continues to fly under the radar with a straight-sets win, but Daniil Medvedev, a three-time runner-up at Melbourne Park, was stunned by Learner Tien.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic’s fourth-round opponent Jakub Mensik has withdrawn from tomorrow night’s clash, meaning the 10-time champion gets a free passage through to the quarterfinals.
