Asics Introduces a Max-cushioned Running Shoe Designed to Go Slow

While the lion’s share of attention goes to the running shoes that help you go faster, Asics is showing some love to the less glamorous category of easy runs with a brand-new model under its Gel banner.

The Asics Gel-SlowCush prioritizes comfort while being recommended for recovery runs, low-intensity training or merely chill jaunts. Two technologies are making their debut as part of their mission. FF Luxe Plus foam is engineered for ultra plushness, and it works in conjunction with PureGel Plus providing softness and shock absorption. Up top, an engineered mesh upper offers ample padding at the collar and tongue.

“We saw an opportunity to create a completely new comfort experience within our running range,” Asics senior manager of performance running footwear Paul Lang said in a press release. “Rather than focusing on speed or performance gains, we started with a simple question: how can we make easy runs feel even more enjoyable? The combination of technology was developed to deliver an exceptionally soft and comfortable ride, while the overall construction was carefully refined to create a premium experience from the moment runners step into the shoe. Every element was designed with comfort in mind.”

A massive stack height puts the heel of the Gel-SlowCush at 48mm, putting it in league with the Nike Vomero Plus (46mm) and Hoka Skyward X (48mm). An 8mm drop goes down to 40mm at the forefoot, and weight comes in at 298 grams for a men’s size 9.

John Korir, an Asics runner who ran the Chicago Marathon and has the 10th best time at the distance all-time, added: “The easy days are just as important as the hard days in marathon training. They give your body the chance to recover while still building the consistency that every runner needs. The Gel-SlowCush shoe feels incredibly soft and comfortable underfoot, making it a shoe I can reach for when I want to slow things down and simply enjoy the miles. Sometimes the best runs are the ones where you’re not thinking about pace at all.

The Asics Gel-SlowCush will release Oct. 1 through the brand’s website and stores, as well as specialty run stores. Pricing is set at $200.
