Just yesterday, we heard that Nvidia GPUs are to see yet another price hike of up to 30 percent, as the hunger for generative AI hardware worsens the component crisis and sky-rocketing costs for computing hardware continues. PlayStation, however, has promised it has stockpiled enough memory to weather the storm – at least for now.

In the latest financial statement released by the company (the same one that revealed PlayStation will not be backtracking on its commitment to an ‘all-digital future’), Sony announced it has secured enough memory to ensure PS5 demand is met until March 2027.

“Regarding the impact of memory market conditions on PlayStation 5 hardware, we have secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume for FY26, and there is no change to our plan for hardware profitability for FY26 to remain similar to FY25,” notes the statement (thanks, IGN).

Given the massive swell of games launching in September and October as the games industry at large swerves to avoid the gargantuan release of GTA 6, you can see why the latter half of 2026 is going to be a big deal for Sony. The launch of Rockstar’s highly-anticipated sandbox game, alongside multiple other triple-A releases and platform exclusives such as Marvel’s Wolverine, will no doubt bolster PS5 sales – with consumers likely undaunted by the recent PlayStation 5 price rises.

It’s interesting to hear that Sony is anticipating more sales (at least in the short term): earlier this year, the company noted that it expected PS5 sales to decline due to generative AI memory drought and rising prices. It remains to be seen how many units Sony will be able to manufacture from March 2027 onwards, then: other manufacturers such as Steam and Microsoft have noted how the memory crisis is impacting the availability of units, and the cost for consumers at the point of sale. Nintendo has not been immune to the on-going hardware crisis, either.

IGN notes that PlayStation continues to be profitable, even if PS5 sales continue to fall. In Q1 2026, Sony sold 1.6 million PS5 units, and total PlayStation Monthly Active Users reached 125 million accounts in June. There has been a negative impact to the company’s coffers, though, in the form of “investments for the next-generation platform and restructuring costs.” Given what we know so far, we can expect the PS6 to be more expensive than we’re used to from previous generations – and it’ll take longer to launch, too.

The memory crisis, by all accounts, looks set to get worse before it gets better.
