Apple Isn’t Following Its Typical Playbook for the September iPhone Event

Apple Couldn’t Wait on New Macs

Apple surprised the tech world this week by selling new versions of the Mac Mini and Mac Studio desktop machines, right as it also released a teaser for its big iPhone event on Sept. 9.

No wonder the event tagline is Surprise and Shine. Launching new Macs and iPhones isn’t the typical Apple playbook for September, but nothing about the month will be typical with a new CEO, John Ternus, taking the helm on Tuesday.

In this week’s episode of One More Thing, embedded below, I go over all the surprises this week in Apple’s product lineup, along with an unexpected Apple victory: Walmart is starting to accept Apple Pay at stores across the US.

But we’re all still waiting to see what’s in store for new iPhones in a few weeks. Did Apple spoil some of the “surprise” in the event teaser art?

It’s rumored the iPhone 18 Pro lineup will come in a light-blue hue — the same color chosen for the background of this announcement. And it’s also rumored that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a camera that lets in more light with a variable aperture, perhaps indicated by the bright lens flare we see surrounding Apple’s logo.

As for a clue to the folding iPhone that analysts expect, well, the lens flare does make an interesting crease right in that Apple core.
