Anya Hindmarch Reimagines Boots for Latest Concept Store in London

LONDON — Anya Hindmarch loves digging deep into British life, opening concept stores and creating designs around the candy, ice cream and corner shops of her youth.

Come Saturday, she’ll be teaming with the national pharmacy and beauty chain Boots, opening a temporary shop with a retro 1970s vibe. It will sell leather accessories inspired by over-the-counter drugs, as well as a line of everyday items featuring her brand’s signature animated eyes and squiggly mouths.

“A village should always have a Boots at some stage, and it just felt right. It’s part of the very fabric of the U.K., and the heritage is very, very strong,” said the designer, who will unveil Anya Hindmarch x Boots at The Village Hall on London’s Pont Street on Saturday.

“We’ve done a really fun interpretation. It’s a bit of a 1970s Boots from my childhood,” she added. The Village Hall is part of the designer’s cluster of shops between Belgravia and Knightsbridge, and the shop will remain open until March 8.

Hindmarch said Boots, which was founded in Nottingham, England, in 1849, opened its archive so she could research the branding, ads and designs for the shop. The two worked together on the packaging for the toiletries.

The store design was inspired by a classic apothecary. The exterior features the Boots blue and white palette paired, arched wooden windows and vintage 1970s-style signage. Inside, there’s retro tiling, staff dressed in crisp white coats and dispensary-inspired packaging.

Hindmarch said the offer is “really fun. This is not me launching makeup or cosmetics. It’s a range of everyday toiletries — cotton earbuds and cotton wool, tweezers, shampoo, hand and body lotion. They’re things that will pep up your bathroom in January when we will all need a lift.”

Each piece is created in collaboration with Boots and available in limited numbers, at accessible prices, for the duration of the store. There are two limited-edition wash bags — First Aid and Meds — inspired by antique pieces from the Boots archive.

She has also done a collection of small leather accessories that riff on the branding of first aid and over-the-counter brands including Berocca, Advil, Band-Aid, Imperial Leather and Nurofen.

The collaboration also features the latest version of the Anya Hindmarch reusable Universal Bag in Boots’ palette of blue and white.

Sophie Clapp, head of archives at Boots, said that “from humble beginnings, Boots has grown into a British high-street institution and a trusted household name, yet our mission to care for customers and communities remains unchanged. I’m excited to celebrate this rich heritage through Anya Hindmarch’s unique and joyful vision.”

After the concept store shuts, the Anya Hindmarch x Boots essentials collection will be available to shop on boots.com for a limited time.

Hindmarch launched The Village in 2021. It comprises five neighboring stores, including the Anya Café and The Village Hall, which houses different creative concepts throughout the year.
