Newcastle University has announced the creation of the Institute of Devolution, with renowned economist Andy Haldane appointed as its first Professorial Fellow. The institute is designed as a hub for researchers, policymakers, business leaders, and civic partners aimed at addressing regional growth and public policy aligned with the devolution of power.

Haldane, a leading economist known for his prior roles as Chief Economist at the Bank of England and President of the British Chambers of Commerce, hails from the North East of England, where the new Institute is based. He emphasized the transformative potential of regional innovation and leadership, stating, “The UK’s economic future will increasingly be shaped by the success of its cities, regions, and communities.”

The Institute of Devolution will focus on collaborative research and engagement, building on the growing national momentum for regional leadership. Professor Jane Robinson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Newcastle University, noted that the institute aims to be a global voice on devolution, helping to convert devolved powers into tangible benefits for communities.

Dr. Henry Kippin, Chief Executive of the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, stressed the necessity of using diverse ideas and expertise from various institutions to shape the devolution agenda effectively. Haldane’s role will include supporting events, evidence inquiries, and facilitating student engagement in addressing real-world policy challenges for a two-year term.
