American Airlines A319 Met By Police After Passenger Allegedly Gropes Seatmate

The police were requested to meet a recent American Airlines flight at the gate after it was alleged that a passenger physically assaulted the passenger in the adjoining seat. Flight attendants quickly stepped in to de-escalate the situation and separated the individuals for the remainder of the flight.

American flight 2742 was a nonstop service on Wednesday, October 14, from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Kansas City International Airport (MCI), and the flight was passing over the skies of Wichita, just before commencing descent when the incident took place.

As reported by AirLive, the incident involved a passenger seated in 12A, when it is alleged that the individual inappropriately touched the private parts of the neighboring passenger in seat 12B. Flight attendants were alerted to what was unfolding and promptly stepped in to de-escalate the situation.

The two were then separated onboard for the remainder of the flight, and flight crew subsequently requested that law enforcement meet the flight upon arrival in Kansas City. Upon the A319’s arrival in Kansas, police met the aircraft and spoke to the individuals involved. According to Flightdrama, it remains unclear if anyone was arrested or charged.

Flight crew and flight attendants are trained to follow a step-by-step procedure when they are required to handle inappropriate or disruptive behavior during a flight. They will look to de-escalate the situation and, depending on the type of incident (in this case, physically abusive behavior), will see the relocation of passengers where possible.

Simple Flying reached out to American Airlines for comment on the incident; however, an airline spokesperson could not immediately be reached.

A Scheduled Nonstop Flight To Kansas City Takes A Sour Turn

Reviewing data from Simple Flying’s Flight Tracker, American operates up to three daily flights from Dallas/Fort Worth to Kansas City, and on October 14, the incident occurred on the airline’s midday service. The flight had departed from Dallas/Fort Worth at 11:58 AM, five minutes ahead of its scheduled departure time of 12:03 PM.

Taking off in a northerly direction, the flight quickly rose to its cruising altitude of around 34,000 feet for the near 90-minute journey to Kansas City. As the aircraft was over Wichita, the inappropriate incident occurred, which led to the crew stepping in and requesting law enforcement. The flight then arrived shortly after in Kansas City at 1:22 PM.

Once all passengers had deplaned, the incident did not appear to have any effect on the return service, with AA2742 (same flight number for the return flight) departing at 2:26 PM (six minutes behind the 2:20 PM departure time), for a 4:02 PM arrival back into Dallas/Fort Worth, five minutes ahead of its 4:07 PM scheduled arrival time.

The aircraft at the centre of the incident was N737US, which ch-aviation identifies as a 26.4-year-old A319-100. The plane took its first test flight back in 2000, under German Airbus registration D-AVYN, before subsequently being delivered to US Airways in June that year. It was configured at the time with 12 Domestic First Class seats and 112 Economy seats.

The jet was then transferred to American Airlines as part of the airline’s merger with US Airways, moving to the AA fleet in December 2013. It is now configured with eight Domestic First class seats and 120 in the Main Cabin. It was last reconfigured in 2016. Full details of the jet below:
