Alex Davies admits he ‘owed runs’ after Warwickshire to victory


Warwickshire batter Alex Davies admitted he owes his teammates and supporters runs after helping steer the Bears to victory in their One-Day Cup win over Lancashire.

Wicket-keeper Davies, who left Lancashire for Edgbaston in 2022, made an unbeaten 51 as the Bears chased 312 to win by two wickets at Rugby School on Sunday – and by doing so kept their slim hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals alive.

By Davies’ own admission, he has not accumulated as many runs this season as he would have hoped for or expected.

He averaged just under 20 in the One-Day Cup prior to Sunday’s knock which, along with the innings of Vansh Jani, who hit 88, proved a crucial contribution.

“I was just happy to spend some time out in the middle,” Davies said. “It’s been a pretty tough year. I’d say I’m down on runs – I owe the boys runs, I owe the club runs and I owe the fans runs.

“I was pretty determined to just be out there at the end. The way Vansh batted around me, I didn’t really need to do much other than just be there at the end.”

Jani’s 88 was a career-best score and was the latest eye-catching innings in the 21-year-old’s List A campaign, in which he averages over 55 with the bat.

A product of the South Asian Cricket Academy, Jani enjoyed first-team exposure last year but has progressed further across various formats this summer.

“I don’t want to big him up too soon, or bring any unwanted attention but, without swearing, he’s very good,” Davies told BBC Sport.

“Seeing the way he has come into the squad…I don’t want to make any too outlandish comments, but he’s very good and it’s been a joy to watch him bat.

“I’ve batted with him a couple of times in the warm up games. He’s going to be a special player.”

Remarkably, although they are eighth in Group A, Warwickshire host Kent in their final group match on Tuesday still in with a chance of advancing to the knockout stage, but a number of permutations are likely to be required.

“We haven’t worked out the specifics yet,” Davies added.

“Whether it comes down to net run rate or it might be that we need to chase something down in 20 overs – if that’s the case, we’ll give it a crack and it might be entertaining.

“We will just control what we can control and, hopefully come Tuesday, we’ll have the full picture.”
