While most committees are set to spend the first week of the fall sitting ensconced in closed-door planning sessions, several public meetings have popped up on the parliamentary calendar, including one at OFFICIAL LANGUAGES, where MPs are set to get an update on the use of French at Air Canada, courtesy of a trio of senior executives before moving in camera to work on a separate report on draft regulations on the use of French in federally-regulated private businesses. Also this afternoon: STATUS OF WOMEN members will circle back to their ongoing investigation into the “role and capacity of women’s shelters and transitional housing” with back-to-back presentations from the Observatoire québécois des inégalités, Kanesatake Health Centre, Canadian Women’s Foundation, YWCA NWT and Courage for Freedom. (4:30 p.m.)

Over at NATURAL RESOURCES, Saguenay Mayor Luc Boivin is among the witnesses set to testify as MPs pick up where they left off in reviewing “electrification, energy self-sufficiency and domestic energy security” in Canada, with senior representatives of the Canadian Renewable Energy Association and WaterPower Canada also slated to appear. (5:15 p.m.)

Rounding out the roster, Conservative MP Mel Arnold will join his former Conservative caucus colleague, Colin Carrie, as well as victims’ rights advocate Lisa Freeman, at PUBLIC SAFETY AND NATIONAL SECURITY as MPs begin clause-by-clause review of Arnold’s backbench proposal to expand the rules for disclosing information to victims on temporary absences, releases or parole. (4:30 p.m.)
