So, what’s special about the new Pro Evo 3 shoe?
This new super shoe, which debuted for the first time in London, is the first to weigh under 100 grams — 97 grams for a men’s size 9.5 — and improves running economy by 1.6 percent, versus the Pro Evo 2. Most of the reduction is from a new Lightstrike Pro Evo foam compound that is 50 percent lighter than prior blends. But the 30 percent weight reduction comes at a price. The new shoe costs $500 a pair and became available for purchase on Monday exclusively on the Adidas app to be followed by a wider release this fall.
Since its launch in August, the Asics Metaspeed Ray held the title of lightest running shoe on the market at 129 grams for a men’s size 9. Nike’s bestselling Alphafly 3 — the Alphafly series is considered the standard for super shoes — weights more than twice as much as the Pro Evo 3 at 218 grams for a men’s size 10. While Li Ning has gone even light with the Dragonflight at 103 grams for a men’s size 11, the 2023 concept shoe hasn’t yet gone into production.
