A Private Jet From New York To London Costs Up To $250,000. Here’s Exactly What You Get.

Privately hiring a Boeing Business Jet to get from New York to London is a prospect most will only ever dream of. At upwards of a quarter of a million dollars one-way to charter a Boeing 737-based private jet for the journey, the price tag is no joke, and it is no surprise that a hefty chunk of those who rent out the model globally are government heads of state.

That is not to say the trip cannot be made for less, and a wide array of aircraft available for charter means prices for such a service from the English capital to the Big Apple really vary. But a cheaper option will, naturally, mean a smaller aircraft with less space and versatility around what is offered onboard. So, what might one get for forking out the $250,000-plus, and do the offerings make it worth it?

What Is The Boeing Business Jet Like Onboard?

According to charter firm Paramount Business Jets, the estimated cost of hiring a Boeing Business Jet to fly one-way between New York and London is $270,000. This places the VIP airliner among the most expensive when compared to other private jets in the ultra-long-range or large categories that might otherwise be used for the roughly seven-hour crossing.

Originally developed from the 737 family using the -700’s fuselage and -800’s wings and landing gear, the Boeing Business Jet is said to typically have room for 19 passengers. While capacity can be stretched to 149, the lower-density configuration means the model is often operated with one or two fully-private bedrooms, as well as two or three bathrooms. These might be fitted with showers depending on layout, per Paramount, with a full-service galley incorporating a microwave, oven, refrigerator, and trash compactor also available. Flight attendants will also be on board, in line with rules around large aircraft operations in both the United States and Europe.

Given the clientele, of which Paramount notes that around a third are government heads of state, office space also appears to be a major selling point behind the Boeing Business Jet. Compatibility with “all of the latest gizmos and gadgets” allows video conferences to be held in the air, including via a range of monitors onboard that might also be used for entertainment.

Private Jet Prices Vary: How Are They Calculated?

For the highest price, customers are effectively paying for “a home away from home or an office in the sky,” in Paramount’s own words. The figure discussed above is merely an estimate, though, and the factors that determine what is actually paid are plentiful. Most important is the hourly rate for privately hiring a jet, which changes based on size and model. For the Boeing Business Jet, for instance, Paramount lists this at $18,600 an hour. Note that the trip mentioned exceeds this per-hour rate because the price includes a one-way journey, and it is effectively cheaper per hour to book a return journey, as explained later.

This hourly rate typically encompasses the cost of the aircraft itself, a two-pilot crew, fuel, and standard liability insurance. These vary massively, ranging from as little as $3,500 to $20,000-plus per hour for light to ultra-long-range or VIP airliners as of 2026, according to charter airline FlyEliteJets.

Ultimately, aircraft capability, cabin size, and range determine the hourly rate. Within these, fuel burn rates, crew experience, alongside aircraft age and cabin status have to be considered. Of course, a brand-new, larger jet requiring a crew with thousands of flight hours under their belts will command a far higher premium than an older, smaller model used for short domestic hops.

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Private Jet?

Charter Service Fuel Surcharges, Landing Fees, And Other Hidden Costs

Hourly rates are just one part of the overall cost of chartering a private jet, and so working out how much a trip might cost is somewhat more complicated. Other fees to consider include local taxes, airport fees, fuel surcharges, additional crewing costs, and repositioning fees, so the amount paid may be well above the advertised hourly rate.

Fuel surcharges are set by operators to cover any increases in jet fuel prices. These alone can lead to large swings in the cost of chartering jets at times of volatility, with surcharges usually adjusted each month in line with changing oil prices. Again, the aircraft type will play a part, as larger planes requiring more fuel will incur higher surcharges relative to their size. Size and weight also play a part in airport fees, with fixed-based operators charging for handling and other services at the private terminals for charter aircraft.

But the additional costs do not stop there, with crew expenses increasing for overnight trips as accommodation and per diem must be funded. Positioning can also cost if an aircraft needs to be relocated for the charter flight. Taxes then vary from country to country and are paid separately to the hourly rate. Optional extras like catering or WiFi onboard might even leave passengers further out of pocket, with the latter costing anywhere from $3.00 to $8.50 per megabyte used on international flights, per Paramount. Simply put, absolutely anything that might be needed for a private flight is unlikely to come for free – just think, what happens if something as vital as deicing is required? Per Forbes, bills for service on large-cabin jets can range from over $30,000.

Costs aside, it is worth exploring how much more freedom one will have by flying aboard a privately-hired aircraft. It might not be unreasonable to expect almost absolute flexibility regarding timing, baggage, destination, and so on, given the vast sums involved in such travel. However, the reality is quite different, and passengers would be well advised to read the small print.

Paramount’s frequently asked questions offer a relatively clear picture of the parameters of private flight. Unless flying between major airports with stricter slot times, charter operators are said to usually offer 30-minute to two-hour windows for departure. Baggage aboard light or mid-sized charter planes roughly mirrors hold allowances on conventional airline services, with one large suitcase at 50 lbs (23 kg), and on larger models “more than one item of luggage per person.” Pets are generally allowed too, though advance notice is required and fees may well apply for cleaning.

On the topic of pets, flying with furry friends could require landing at certain airports with the capacity to process them. This includes London Luton Airport (LTN) and London Biggin Hill Airport (BQH) in the United Kingdom, rental firm Jettly explains. As well as this, customs rules remain the same for charter passengers, so flying with large sums of cash, say, means adhering to declaration requirements on both sides of the Atlantic. All this goes to say that the setting may be more luxurious both at airport lounges and on the plane, but special treatment cannot be expected upon actually entering another country, unsurprisingly.

Private Jet Rental Costs Can Be Kept Down

Those seeking private flights do not necessarily have to pay top dollar for the experience. At least, there are ways to avoid forking out over $250,000 for a single flight between London and New York. Empty leg flights are commonplace across the industry and are offered by operators at drastically reduced rates when an aircraft needs to be repositioned.

Empty leg flights are solely down to operators’ schedules, so one would be lucky to score a deal on a route they need at a specific date and time. Operator GlobeAir lists such offers on its website, providing a reference for how large a discount could be secured. A next-day flight in early June from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) was going for €1,710 ($1,988), for instance. The roughly two-hour flight would normally be worth €15,600 ($18,135), which translates to an 89% discount, based on GlobeAir’s listings.

Failing to secure an empty-leg flight, one would find their money goes further by booking a round-trip rather than just a single leg. Booking one way still requires a customer to cover the costs of repositioning, which, as Paramount writes, will leave them “effectively paying double”. Indeed, the company estimates a Boeing Business Jet round trip between London and New York at $345,000, against the $270,000 for a single leg. As such, flying both ways on the same private aircraft will basically mean that the money spent goes further.

Larger Private Jets More Economical Per Passenger

There is no doubt that the price of renting out a VIP airliner to make the transatlantic crossing is extortionate on the surface. But one bonus of choosing such a large jet and filling it up with passengers is that the cost per person may not sit all that far off the price of a first class ticket with a conventional airline.

British Airways’ website showed a first-class fare for a round trip from London to New York in mid-July at £5,688.69 ($7,639.21) as of early June. Based on Paramount’s estimate of $345,000 for the same trip using the Boeing Business Jet, full flights both ways would cost $9,078.95 for each of the 19 passengers onboard. While still more than the British Airways ticket, the cost per seat could go much higher on a jet only suited to just a handful of passengers.
