Qatar Airways Reveals Major New 15-Hour Nonstop Long-Haul Route: See Map Now

Qatar Airways has revealed that it will fly from its Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) hub to Australia’s new Western Sydney International (WSI). There are currently no indications that another Gulf giant will join the oneworld member in WSI.

Jetstar will commence WSI’s first commercial passenger service later this week. On October 25, the Qantas Group unit will take off for both the Gold Coast and Melbourne. WSI’s first international passenger operation will occur the next day, when Air New Zealand arrives from Auckland. Qatar Airways’ announcement comes a month before WSI welcomes Singapore Airlines.

The oneworld member is due to begin flying from DOH to WSI on December 15, 2027. That’s right: the brand-new route has been announced with nearly 14 months’ notice, which is an extraordinarily long amount of lead time. Spare a thought for Air India, for example, which sometimes announces a new long-haul operation with one or two months’ notice.

Given the curfew at Sydney’s main airport, Qatar Airways has not previously been able to serve the city at this time of day. Now it can, albeit to WSI. It’ll coexist with a late evening arrival in Brisbane (Qatar Airways) and Melbourne (partner Virgin Australia)

Very sensibly, Qatar Airways’ launch will be timed to coincide with the peak summer Down Under and in time for Christmas, with higher fares and demand. It may also allow greater stability, given the ongoing war in Iran. But given how long it is until next December, it is quite possible that changes to the route will materialize.

Qatar Airways will initially serve WSI three times weekly, becoming the carrier’s least-served route to Australia. Subject to performance, traffic rights, aircraft availability, and more, the plan is to increase the frequency to daily by the end of 2028. Time will tell if that happens. To maximize two-way connectivity across Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Africa, the operating Boeing 777-300ER will spend many hours on the ground in WSI.

Qatar Airways’ decision to fly to WSI was influenced by AUD$16+ million in support. Incentives and other risk-sharing agreements, such as revenue guarantees, are perfectly common in attracting and securing new airlines, although some simply pull out when support ends. Lufthansa, for example, has secured nearly US$50 million for its upcoming service from Frankfurt to Columbus, Ohio.

OAG data shows that the new route means that Qatar Airways will fly to seven airports in Australia, as outlined below. In contrast, Emirates has passenger service to five of them, while there are only two for Etihad Airways. Then there’s Cathay Pacific, whose network encompasses four of the airports.

Singapore Airlines is in a very different position, helped by its geographic position and the use of the Boeing 737 MAX 8. With the launch of flights to WSI in November 2026, it’ll serve eight Australian airports. Canberra Airport (CBR) is no longer part of its map, but it does fly to Cairns Airport (CNS) and Darwin International Airport (DRW).

Qatar Airways operates in very close partnership with Virgin Australia, which flies to DOH using Qatar Airways’ aircraft. This setup is simply to increase the Gulf giant’s access to the highly valuable Australian market, without which its presence would be substantially smaller due to limited traffic rights. Virgin’s presence is a way for the Middle Eastern operator to expand through the backdoor.

Qatar Airways Plans Up To 11 Daily Nonstop Flights To Australia

Assuming there are no more changes, Qatar Airways and Virgin will jointly have up to 11 daily nonstop flights from DOH to Australia. To avoid double-counting, the extension CBR, which is only done to increase access to the huge MEL market, is excluded. 11 daily services means it’ll have the same maximum frequency as Cathay Pacific, but it’ll have half the services of Singapore Airlines.

For now, at least, Emirates plans ten daily services from the end of March 2027. Of course, the United Arab Emirates operator will easily win the seats-for-sale fight against Qatar Airways and Virgin, given the enormous use of the Airbus A380 to Australia. They’re deployed on seven of the ten daily flights to BNE (daily), MEL (two daily), PER (daily), and SYD (three daily from the end of next March).
