GTA: San Andreas’ Bigfoot myth is a classic urban legend

There is a Bigfoot in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — at least, that’s what I and many others believed. Some time after the game had been released, the rumour about the new Rockstar game featuring the legendary creature spread across the internet. I remember learning about this “secret monster” from an older guy. Then I told some boys from my classroom the cool rumor I had heard about in that game our parents didn’t want us to play. Word of mouth and low-resolution images shared through dial-up internet connections made GTA: San Andreas an exciting mystery.

It’s been 22 years since the game was released, and now we know that was only an urban legend. There’s no Bigfoot in San Andreas (unfortunately). But we couldn’t figure out that by ourselves when the rumor started. The year was 2004, and information about games was scarce compared to nowadays. There was no way for us to confirm the authenticity of the allegedly real photo of Bigfoot posted by user “xDaRkAnGel_2000x” on a gaming forum.

The lack of reliable sources made these theories seem even more plausible. Aside from a few print publications, you basically had to spend hours browsing forums and GameFAQs posts to read about games and learn more about them. If you grew up in countries outside major game development hubs like the U.S. or Europe, you had even fewer options. I remember using an old social network called Orkut, which was huge in Brazil, to ask for help in a Final Fantasy 10 group.

The concept of not knowing what exactly was in the game might sound absurd in 2026, but hear me out. In the early 2000s, all kinds of fan theories and urban legends appeared, like the “Dragon Ball AF,” a fan-made continuation of the famous manga created by Akira Toriyama, in which we would supposedly see Goku achieve his Super Saiyan 6 form, with silver long hair. If many of us believed in a silver Goku, why wouldn’t we believe in a Bigfoot in GTA: San Andreas?

People didn’t really care whether there really was a Bigfoot in GTA San Andreas as much as they cared about the mysterious and enticing atmosphere that a secret added to the game. Games were all about secrets back then. From cheat codes that could unlock systems to hidden armor pieces in Mega Man X, you would inevitably assume there were secrets to uncover — and some we would never know whether they were real.

Secrets made games sexy. The more mysterious the games were, the more alive our imaginations could wander, making the gossip and rumors around them seem real. That’s why it was so easy to believe that Shadow of the Colossus had hidden bosses. And that’s why the idea of Rockstar adding a real urban legend to one of the most controversial games of that generation made it feel even more exotic.

While the gaming industry in 2026 is facing major challenges, with the Xbox reset and artificial intelligence becoming what seems an inescapable threat to the industry, gaming as an art form is in a good place. But that element of mystery is gone, since every game can be datamined, and we can learn not only the ins and outs of the games we experience, but also things we were never meant to know. Talented dataminers have been conducting almost archeological expeditions into the immaterial catacombs of cut content — like some areas in Bloodborne — that were meant to be forgotten beneath layers of codes.

I don’t want to sound like the millennial who’s nearing 40 and believes things used to be better back in the day — although some things were! It’s possible to have interesting and enriching gaming experiences in 2026, and unlike when I first played GTA: San Andreas, we can learn so much about games. But sometimes, I do wonder if we should stop looking for better graphics, digital dongs, and faster chips… and go back to chasing Bigfoot.
