In the 1960s and early ’70s, Sam McDowell, a six-time all-star pitcher with the Cleveland Indians, was “the biggest, most hopeless and most violent drunk in baseball,” as he said years later. His legacy was one of self-destruction, an elite major leaguer who drank himself out of the game, squandering his potential for greatness.
