Modders are furious as Claude-powered mashup mods flood social media

Long-time mod makers are not happy about the latest trend to take over their corner of the internet – the “bullshit ‘trend'” of AI-generated, or “vibe-coded”, mods.

As first reported by IGN, the backlash is building after a number of modders – including some who openly admit to using generative AI to help write their mods – opened up about mashup mods splicing entirely unrelated games together.

“I mod games and I’m not shy about the fact that I use AI to do it. I hate this bullshit ‘trend’. Pure slop, there’s nothing creative about this at all,” modder kran27_ posted, adding that “the shit that’s getting the clicks is this jingling keys bullshit”.

Another, discountmodder, added: “If this becomes the permanent state of modding, this may be my last project. I don’t wanna be involved in an AI slop-factory”.

What’s got them so riled up is the huge surge of mods that bring unrelated games together, from World of Warcraft into Call of Duty: World at War, to Escape From Tarkov into Skyrim, and a version of Insomniac’s Spider-Man that lets you swing around Batman: Arkham City’s Gotham.

The trend has snowballed just over the course of a single week, driven by Claude Opus 5.5’s cheaper tokens and improved code generation making it easier than ever to point the model at a game, decompile it, and add in something else entirely.

The results are inconsistent at best. Footage from YouTuber Brendan Jowett comparing Opus 5.5 against OpenAI’s Astra 6 model shows both struggling with the basics, including enemies that ignore the player, a space fighter that flies diagonally while shooting straight ahead.

None of these mashups have popped up on modding platforms like Nexus Mods yet, though, and IGN suggests that’s likely down to rights issues rather than lack of interest. Nexus’s own 2023 policy on AI-generated content is blunt about it: “In order to prevent any issues with your mods, we encourage you to avoid using these tools unless you have explicit permission to use all the assets”.

Almost all of the mods circulating on Twitter/X rely on decompiled code and assets the people building them have no rights to, which is precisely the scenario Nexus’s policy was written to exclude.

As IGN posits, whether that holds once a platform does decide to host them is what’s got modders most on edge. Right now, the trend is confined to engagement farming on Twitter/X but could reshape what “modding” means.

In related news, ahead of the bottomless GTA 6 mods we’ll surely get whenever the crime epic finally comes to PC, Rockstar Games has imposed new restrictions on the modding community.
