Contrary to comic book science, you don’t need to enroll in a shadowy Canadian black-ops program and undergo excruciating pain to get a set of Wolverine’s signature claws. Instead, it’s much easier–and less traumatic–to simply hire some blacksmiths to craft you a set, which is exactly what PlayStation did to celebrate the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine. Choosing Fiedlero Knives for the job, PlayStation tasked the blacksmith with creating a custom set of Wolverine-inspired claws, and unsurprisingly, the end result looks downright lethal.
They may not be made of indestructible adamantium, but these blades made short work of some fresh produce when tested. And best of all, you don’t need a mutant healing factor to wield these–although it would be advisable, just in case you equip them and accidentally trip. Similar to the practical props used by Hugh Jackman, these claws are attached to a handle that makes the blades look like they’re really coming out of your hands. Plenty of knock-offs are available online, including plastic versions that are slightly safer than the metal ones.
Marvel’s Wolverine launched earlier this month, but the reception has been lukewarm at best. The game has been criticized for its restrictive level design, excessive hand-holding, and repetitive combat, but developer Insomniac Games is aiming to address these complaints. A new patch for the game recently went live, toning down the intrusive scent trails and audio cues that lead to collectibles within the various levels.
“At best, it’s a fun but forgettable experience that’ll entertain you for a few hours. At worst, it shows that just because you can make really good superhero games with one character, that doesn’t mean you can make really good superhero games with any character,” Tamoor Hussain wrote in GameSpot’s Marvel’s Wolverine review.
While that set of custom Wolverine claws aren’t for sale, you can get your hands on a sixth-scale replica of the unstoppable mutant from Hot Toys. It comes with several sets of smaller claws to equip him with, as well as an impressive amount of accurate body hair on his beefy silicone arms.
