The nation’s top law enforcement official appears unlikely to investigate a Russian oligarch with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin who allegedly paid thousands of dollars to bankroll festivities for Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding to Bettina Anderson earlier this year, after the news sparked national security and counterintelligence concerns.

“The president doesn’t know who this person is. I think other members of the family don’t know who this person is … When you say am I investigating — Am I investigating what?” Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters Tuesday during a White House press briefing in the Rose Garden.  

Donald Trump Jr. and his wife were married at Palm Beach, Florida, before departing for a wedding party on a private island in the Bahamas in late May and the oligarch — Umar Kremlev — footed a large portion of the bill for the events later that weekend, according to records reviewed by nonprofit investigative outlet ProPublica, as well as three people familiar with the event who spoke with the outlet.

The payments included the cost of renting a private island and a fireworks display, ProPublica reported. Payments for the expenses reportedly came from an entity affiliated with the International Boxing Association, for which Kremlev serves as president.

The IBA was suspended by the International Olympic Committee in 2019 due to financial issues and organizational problems, including concerns about corruption.

ABC News has not independently confirmed the details of the ProPublica report.

The couple has since acknowledged that Kremlev gave them an “extraordinarily generous” wedding gift. It’s not clear why he paid for parts of Trump Jr.’s wedding celebration.

“The president’s son has said that he’s a very close friend and that he accepted a gift the weekend of his wedding,” Blanche said Tuesday. “And when you say this person is a friend of Putin, I don’t even know if that’s true or not.”

“I don’t have any information. I don’t know this person either, so I don’t have any information about it,” Blanche added. 

Members of President Donald Trump’s family forcefully denied knowledge of Kremlev as Democrats on Capitol Hill vowed to investigate. 

First lady Melania Trump distanced herself from the brewing controversy involving Kremlev on Tuesday.

In a statement provided to ABC News, the first lady’s office said she did not attend the wedding or the celebrations afterward, adding: “Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev. Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning.”

The president on Monday said he does not personally know Kremlev and that the Russian’s contribution to his son’s wedding “afterparty” was “Not a big deal!”

“I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him, and he didn’t pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding, which took place at a totally different location, and on a different day from the wedding,” Trump said in the statement shared by the White House.

The president added that he was not present for the wedding celebrations. 

The president’s younger son, Eric Trump, also denied having knowledge about Kremlev’s identity.

A spokesperson for Eric Trump told ABC News in a statement that Trump “does not have any business relationship with, nor does he even know who this person is.”

In a recent Instagram post, Anderson stressed that their wedding ceremony was attended “ONLY by our family” and said Kremlev hosted two wedding celebrations after their wedding. 

“It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful,” Anderson wrote in her post.

“It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from,” Anderson continued.

“So, for anyone determined not to let the facts get in the way of a good story: NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY,” said Anderson, who added that the weekend celebrations were initially planned to be a “fun weekend with friends,” but when plans “changed,” they decided to get married before the trip and celebrate as newlyweds.

Lawmakers and critics have expressed concern over the lavish wedding gift. Some of them warned that accepting expensive gifts from foreign adversaries could create potentially severe conflicts of interest and potential leverage over the president’s family.

Kremlev was recently honored with the Order of Friendship by Putin, according to the International Boxing Association.

The ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee sent letters Tuesday to Trump Jr. and the White House seeking more information about the wedding gift revelations and requested Trump Jr. and the White House preserve their records related to the event. 

“A Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin spent hundreds of thousands of dollars bankrolling Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding. It’s baffling that the son of a President would even think about allowing a Russian oligarch to bankroll his wedding. Is this why President Trump skipped his son’s wedding? Oversight Democrats are investigating and demanding answers immediately,” Rep. Robert Garcia wrote.

Garcia, in his letter to Trump Jr. and the White House, said accepting such a lavish gift from someone with close ties to Putin raises serious questions about pay-to-play schemes and foreign intelligence infiltration of the president’s family, and requested that Trump Jr. preserve all records, documents and communications concerning his relationship to Kremlev, including any communications with the White House regarding financing or attendance at his wedding celebrations. 

The Russian government and Putin have led coordinated campaigns to interfere in U.S. elections in both 2016 and 2020, according to national security assessments.

In a statement to ProPublica, Kremlev’s press office said, “Mr. Kremlev and Mr. Trump Jr have a friendly relationship” and they first met “a couple of years ago.”

The statement said, “Mr. Kremlev has never discussed political matters with any of his American friends and acquaintances.” It also said that when Putin and Kremlev were in China recently, Kremlev was not part of Putin’s “official delegation.”

FBI Director Kash Patel was questioned about the ProPublica report Tuesday during a congressional hearing before the Senate, but he claimed he had not read the report, under questioning from Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a democrat from Connecticut. 

Blumenthal asked Patel whether the FBI had begun an investigation “of potential intelligence compromises,” saying Kremlev has direct ties to Putin, and claimed his financial support “would seem an effort to curry favor with the president’s family” and may involve intelligence degradation.”

“I’m not sure what public reporting you’re referring to,” Patel replied. “And so, what the men and women of the FBI will do, as we do in every case, is we will look into whatever information comes our way and analyze it.”
