Louis Vuitton Unveils 30 Years of Menswear in New Catwalk Book

THE LOOK BOOK: Louis Vuitton is about to put nearly 30 years of menswear — and more than 1,200 runway looks — on the same page(s) with a new book that runs through more than 50 collections.

With a foreword and text by fashion critic Anders Christian Madsen, the book explores the eras from Marc Jacobs, Paul Helbers, Kim Jones and Virgil Abloh through today’s Pharrell Williams.

Madsen looks back at Louis Vuitton’s roots in travel and examines menswear through the tenures of these five very different creative directors, as the book demonstrates how menswear has crossed borders and genres to evolve into a shared, increasingly global fashion language.

Rather than cherry-picking its greatest hits, the book presents the collections chronologically, allowing the shifts in silhouette, styling and creative direction to unfold season by season.

With runway images spanning 30 years of collections, the book offers a comprehensive visual record of Louis Vuitton menswear on the runway. Taken together, they walk through the house’s creative evolution, charting how one of luxury’s biggest men’s businesses has continually reinvented itself across different creative eras.

Jacobs helped establish Louis Vuitton as a fashion house beyond its leather-goods heritage; Helbers brought a sharper sense of British tailoring and technicality; Abloh turned the Louis Vuitton men’s runway into one of fashion’s biggest stages while fusing street culture with luxury codes; Jones brought a distinctly British sensibility, drawing on punk, post-punk and youth culture; and Williams has continued to push the brand into music, celebrity and global pop culture.

Due out Nov. 5, “Louis Vuitton Menswear Catwalk” will be published by Thames & Hudson and the first menswear title in its Catwalk series. The tome will be available globally at Louis Vuitton stores and online, as well as a selection of bookstores worldwide.
