Bowie RB Rhys Moreno named Central Texas high school football player of week for Week 3


District play started in notable fashion for some programs in Week 3 of the Central Texas high school football season.

Led by an impressive performance from running back EJ Neal-Adams, Hendrickson defeated Georgetown 28-17 in the most significant local district opener to take a big step toward the playoffs out of District 12-5A Division I. Weiss beat Glenn 48-0 (12-5A DI) and Lockhart edged Lehman 20-17 (13-5A DI) in other noteworthy district games.

Vandegrift, Cedar Park and Round Rock all impressed in nondistrict play. The Vipers defeated Liberty Hill 45-14, the Timberwolves edged Waco Midway 39-34 and the Dragons topped Dripping Springs 35-25.

Week 4 marks the final week of nondistrict play for Class 6A programs and offers several high-profile matchups, including Round Rock at Vandegrift, Cedar Park vs. New Braunfels, Lake Travis vs. San Antonio Cornerstone Christian and Rouse at Cedar Ridge.

District 13-4A Division I, which includes LBJ, Taylor, Northeast and Travis, begins play this week.

Player of the week: Rhys Moreno

The Bowie running back rushed for 257 yards and six touchdowns on 28 carries in a 58-27 win over Converse Judson as the Bulldogs improved to 2-1 entering their final nondistrict game against Stony Point.

Game balls

Nico Anderson, St. Michael’s: Threw for 243 yards and a TD and ran for 182 yards and three scores as the Warriors improved to 4-0 with a 35-31 win over Hyde Park.

Vincent Black, Travis: Ran for 205 yards and six TDs as the Rebels picked up their first win by routing LASA 39-0.

Jayvion Clayter, East View: Rushed for 192 yards and three TDs in a 56-15 win over Legacy Ranch.

Carter Copeland, Cedar Ridge: Caught five passes for 178 yards and two TDs during a 70-23 win over Vista Ridge.

EJ Neal-Adams, Hendrickson: Ran for 191 yards and two TDs in a 28-17 win over Georgetown.

Caleb Gaston, Pflugerville: Accounted for six TDs and 307 total yards in a 62-14 win over Del Valle.
